Ex-Rangers & Aberdeen defender David Bates set for Standard Liege move

David Bates is about to join the tenth club of his career.

The former Rangers defender boasts a nomadic CV that's seen him pile his trade in Germany, England and Belgium by the age of 27.

He's been at K.V. Mechelen since September 2022, after cutting a long-term deal with Aberdeen short, and has went on to make 67 appearances - the most at a single club in Bates' well-travelled career.

But the centre-back, who's been capped four times by Scotland, is set to embark on his next footballing chapter this week, with Standard Liege believed to be closing in on a 750,000 euros deal to bring him to the Maurice Dufrasne Stadium.

This will be Bates' third Belgian employer, having spent the 2020/2021 season on-loan with Cercle Brugge.

Nieuwsblad state that Bates has already emptied his locker in Mechelen over the past weekend and was expected in Liège to take his medical tests on Monday.
