Former Premier League goalkeeper David James has revealed a hilarious story about a time he played against Leeds United at Elland Road with his famous curly, blonde afro.

James made 572 Premier League appearances across his 25-year career, keeping 169 clean sheets - the second-most in English top-flight history since 1992.

"Being at Elland Road with a blonde, curly perm, afro with a few minutes left in the game. All I can hear is 'There's only one [mumbles], one [mumbles]!'.

"And I'm thinking 'Okay, yeah.' But it keeps going on, and on and I'm thinking that 'there's probably some ex-player in the director's box or something'.

"But then there was this moment of clarity. 'There's only one David Gower, one David Gower!'. So I've turned around to look at them and all the fans have gone 'Wayyyyy', and I was like 'Yeah, round of applause'."

In case you don't know who David Gower is, Gower is a former English cricketer who captained the national team, also famous for his blonde curls during his playing days. He then worked in broadcasting and commentary for Sky until 2019.
