Ex Love Islander reveals why contestants keep mentioning their 'top three' and what it really means

Love Island kicked off it's eight week running on Monday as contestants entered the villa in search of lasting relationships.

Viewers have tuned in attentively this week as they get to know the islanders and pick out their favourites as they decipher who is really looking for love and who is playing a game.

However, one topic seems to keep popping up as the contestants discuss who is in their "top three", with nanny Amber even saying the phrase is becoming a bit of a "thing" this season.

But where has the new phrase come from, and why do the islanders seem so obsessed with it?

Ex Love Island contestant Brett Staniland took to Twitter to let people know.

He said: "For those wondering the "Top 3" thing is something producers ask us everyday in private, even before we enter, to gauge where the show might go and to know who to throw in at certain points. But this is the most I've seen it spoken about in the villa."

Replying to his post, Love Island winner Amber Gill didn't seem so convinced as she said: "Do they??"

Brett then clarified things further, saying: "We had to submit our top 3 every day during "cast holding" after we'd watched every episode."

The news comes after last night's episode saw things heat up in the villa thanks to two new arrivals, Ekin Su and Afia.

One girl in particular, Ekin Su, looks set to rock the villa as she moves in on footballer Garry Owen's daughter Gemma's man, Italian hottie Davide.

The play saw things get a little more complicated last night as Davide's flirting seemed to have pushed Gemma and fish monger Luca closer together as they revealed they would like to get to know each other.

Luca even went as far as to say he would "swap beds" that night if he could, leaving his current partner Paige single.

Davide was less than impressed after Luca called Gemma for the chat on the terrace, saying he knew that he had his eye on Gemma and hoped he would have the decency to come to him first before pursuing her further.
