A former lollipop lady who dedicated herself to making her local streets safer died after she was hit by a van on one of the streets she had campaigned on.
Irene Allen was seriously injured on Walmersley Road in Bury on December 6.
The 87-year-old died five days later, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.
Ms Allen's daughter Melanie paid tribute to the "first lollipop lady in Bury" and said her "sunny personality" would be missed.
She also noted the 'tragic irony' that her mother had argued for safer crossings for children on the road, back in the 1960s.
Police are investigating the incident, and had urged anyone with footage from the area before the collision - around 11:15am on December 6 - to come forward.
In a statement released by GMP, Ms Allen's daughter said her mother - who had three grandchildren - left behind a "whole community who would miss her sunny personality".
She described her mum as a "keen walker and Rawtenstall Cricket fan".
She added: "Always putting others before herself, in the mid-1960s Irene complained to Bury Council about the lack of safe crossings for school children across the busy Walmersley Road and became the newsworthy first lollipop lady in Bury.
"This tragic irony sits with us today."
