Shaun Maloney is the front runner to land the vacant Dundee job.
The former Hibs gaffer and Jack Ross, the man he replaced, were the final two candidates on the Dens Park shortlist after it was cut from five names.
But Ross is believed to have decided his future is not with the Scottish Championship side and will pursue other options.

So that has cleared the way for ex-Celtic and Scotland star Maloney to land the gig.
He only lasted four months in the Easter Road hotseat before he was axed.
Lee Johnson has since been installed as his successor and has already got down to work for the new season with the pre-contract arrivals of David Marshall and Nohan Kenneh.
Maloney has a strong relationship with Dundee director of football Strachan from their time together at Celtic and with the national team set-up.
The Dark Blues suffered relegation to Scotland's second tier after finishing bottom of the Premiership.
Should Maloney land the job, he has already discovered his first opponents following yesterday's Premier Sports Cup group stage draw.
They will come up against Hamilton Accies, Queen's Park, Forfar Athletic and Stranraer as they bid to reach the last 16 of the competition.
