Ex-Celtic chief Peter Lawwell firebomb probe cops could put reward for help back on table

A reward for information to catch the thugs responsible for a firebomb attack on former Celtic FC chief executive Peter Lawwell could be reinstated.

It’s exactly a year since the former football supremo had his house set on fire but no arrests have been made.

The Sunday Mail understands that Police Scotland are considering bringing back a cash reward due after a £20,000 fund was withdrawn in February this year.

The attack at Lawwell’s home in Thorntonhall, Glasgow on May 19 last year, was one of a string of deliberate fires believed to have been orchestrated by gangland figures.

A source said: “The reward was only up for a set period of time but officers have really drawn a blank with getting the right information to catch who’s responsible so they are looking at putting the money back on the table to entice someone forward.”

The attack on the 63-year-old’s luxury home saw three cars set on fire with the flames spreading to part of the property.

Lawwell and his family - including his daughter and baby granddaughter - all had a lucky escape after being woken by one of the cars exploding.

Police later released CCTV images of a key suspect and his vehicle.

Scottish Conservative shadow community safety minister Russell Findlay said: “It’s encouraging to hear police saying they’re continuing to make inquiries and hopefully if this reward is reinstated, someone might come forward with vital information.

“Anyone who targets a family home with fire is taking a reckless gamble with people’s lives. Everything possible must be done to bring these cowards to justice.”

Crimestopppers, who had put up the previous £20,000 reward, said it was a matter the police.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Enquiries remain ongoing into a fireraising incident which occurred in the Thorntonhall area around 12.50am on Wednesday, 19 May, 2021.

“Anyone with information about what happened is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference 0134 of 19 May, 2021. Alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Lawwell admitted his family has been “deeply affected” by the attack.

He left his job as Parkhead CEO weeks later after 17 years at the club but remained a director.
