Ex-Bolton Wanderers, Hull City & Charlton Athletic attacker Marcus Maddison joins non-league club

Former Bolton Wanderers attacker Marcus Maddison has joined non-league side Darlington.

The 28-year-old originally joined Wanderers in January 2021, on loan from Charlton Athletic. He went on to play 10 times for the club, before his loan spell was ended early after admitting he had fallen out of love with the game and took time out from it for mental health reasons.

He later moved to non-league Spalding United and has now joined Alun Armstrong's outfit. The move is subject to FA and National League approval.

He returns to football after around a year out of the game which saw him set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for surgery for a knee injury which might have ended his career. Maddison is now looking forward to getting back playing in his native North East and resume his playing carerr.

Speaking to Darlington's YouTube channel, Maddison said: “Things didn’t go well at Bolton and, headspace, I just wasn’t in the right way to play football anymore. I think taking this year out, getting my injury sorted and things like that has made a huge difference to me mentally.

“I know what I want now and where I want to be. I want to be up North and I want to enjoy myself. I have got six or seven good years left in football so I’m going to use them.

"Since my operation about five months ago, I have been in the gym, running and doing everything I can basically every single day.

“I knew this was my opportunity in the summer to find a club and get back to where I wanted to be. I didn’t have a job to go to so I would be in the gym most days, and I think I have come a long way.”

Maddison came through the youth team ranks at Newcastle United but did not play for the Magpies. His career has taken him to Blyth Spartans, St Johnstone, Gateshead, Peterborough United and Hull City too.
