Ex-Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers & Blackpool midfielder makes Liverpool return

Former Bolton Wanderers captain Jay Spearing is re-joining boyhood club Liverpool.

The 33-year-old spent a total of five seasons on the books at Wanderers, both on loan from the Anfield club and as a permanent signing. He initially joined Bolton in the 2012/13 season on loan before his transfer was made permanent that summer.

In total, Spearing would go on to make 173 appearances for the club and score 10 goals during his time at Wanderers. He departed in the summer of 2017.

His time at Bolton also saw him installed as club captain after the departure of Zat Knight. He also spent half of the 2015/16 campaign out on loan at Blackburn Rovers.

Following his departure from Wanderers, Spearing spent four seasons at Blackpool, playing 120 times for the Bloomfield Road club. From there, the midfielder moved to League Two side Tranmere Rovers.

Spearing is a free agent this summer after leaving the Prenton Park side. But he has now returned where it all started for him in his professional career.

He will work with Liverpool's under-18s by coaching them, and will also be eligible to play for the club's under-21s set up. Spearing made his Liverpool debut in 2008 and racked up 55 appearances for the Anfield side.

Academy manager Alex Inglethorpe said: "It's fantastic to welcome Jay back to the Academy and he will work with the U18s as a full-time coach. Jay will work with Bridgey (Marc Bridge-Wilkinson) and Tim (Tim Jenkins) and he will be actively involved on the training field with our young players.

"He will also be eligible to play for the U21s to provide experience for the young players when we need him.

"Jay is still quite young and the impact he can have around the U18s is invaluable because he is someone who lives and breathes this club. More important, Jay has played across all four divisions, so I think he will be a really good addition for us."
