EWG Report Reveals High Pesticide Levels In US Produce

75% of non-organic fresh produce in the US contained pesticides in 2024.

When consuming fresh fruits and vegetables in the United States, it's important to be aware of the presence of pesticides. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a significant 75% of sampled non-organic fresh produce items in 2024 contained pesticides. This data was part of the EWG's annual report on pesticides in produce, which serves as a consumer guide.

The report was based on tests of over 47,000 samples of 46 fruits and vegetables conducted by the Department of Agriculture and U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The EWG compiled a Dirty Dozen list of the most contaminated produce items, including strawberries, spinach, kale, grapes, peaches, apples, and more.

A total of 209 pesticides were detected on the Dirty Dozen items, with kale, collard, and mustard greens showing the widest variety of pesticides. Notably, 95% of samples from the Dirty Dozen items contained pesticides, with fungicides like fludioxonil, pyraclostrobin, and others being commonly found.

While the health risks of these pesticides require further study, the EWG's report can help consumers make informed choices. For those looking to minimize pesticide exposure, the EWG also releases a Clean 15 list of fruits and vegetables with the lowest residue levels, such as avocados, sweet corn, and pineapples.

The EWG recommends buying organic versions of the Dirty Dozen items and either organic or non-organic versions of the Clean 15 items. However, the organization emphasizes that the health benefits of consuming fresh produce outweigh the risks of pesticide exposure.

It's crucial for everyone to include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in their diet, whether organic or conventionally grown. The EWG's findings can help consumers make informed choices about their produce purchases and prioritize their health.
