Ewen Cameron gives honest take on awkward exchange with Derek McInnes

STV presenter Ewen Cameron has given his take on his interaction with Derek McInnes at the new Rangers manager's unveiling.

Danny Rohl's successor had his first press conference as the club's manager at Ibrox this afternoon as the media were able to quiz him on topics from transfers to why this was the right time to move back to the club he served as a player.

But Hearts-supporting Cameron wasn't yet ready to move on from last season and had questions about McInnes' exit from Tynecastle after coming so close to leading them to title glory.

He had three questions - the first being whether he had been tempted to reject Rangers' advances, the second if he had a message for the Hearts fans and the third on whether he could give assurances he wouldn't be returning to sign any of their players.

McInnes handled the questions well but Cameron has taken some stick from fans on social media.

Posting a video in response this evening, he insists he took everything the 54-year-old said at face value and believes he wouldn't have left Tynecastle for anyone except Rangers. He also insists his final question was tongue-in-cheek.

Cameron said: "That's me just left Ibrox after attending the media conference for the unveiling of Derek McInnes as the Rangers manager and it was an interesting experience. I'm glad I went along.

"Derek, I thought, spoke brilliantly. He spoke with great sincerity, he spoke from the heart and what I would say is this - If it'd been any other club other than Rangers, Derek McInnes would still be the Hearts manager.

"The pull of Rangers was too great. Player, fan, turned down Rangers once before, he was never going to turn them down a second time. This was his chance and he was going to take it and he had to take it. I get it, I totally get it.

"After the media conference, we went upstairs for some getting pictures taken in the main stand with Jim Gillespie who's been the Rangers chair and afterwards Derek made a point of coming over to me and we had a chat in the main stand, also with Jim Gillespie as well.

"There's no doubt about it, you probably heard it in the media conference, Derek McInnes has so much respect and love for Hearts and he wished that he could have stayed longer and I genuinely believe that. He's telling the truth there. He would have loved to have stayed at Hearts a wee bit longer, but as I said, the pull of Rangers is too much for him.

"I get it and I wish him all the best, I do. I shook his hand with a great conversation and I wish him all the best until the day he plays Hearts and I hope we batter them. I did say that to him. But it was an interesting day and I'm glad I went along. I move on, Derek moves on. We're looking forward to a new season.

"One more thing before I go. My third question to Derek McInnes was very much tongue in cheek. Shankland's at the club, rumors of Braga, Derek McInnes is at the club. So when I say can you give the Hearts some assurances you won't be going back there to sign anybody, clearly tongue in cheek, bit of banter, bit of fun. See you muppets who there took that really seriously, thinking I was out of order, calm down, calm down."
