Evolution of Sustainable Practices in Private Aviation

The aviation industry has been largely criticised for its environmental impact, particularly when it comes to carbon emissions and climate change.

However, it appears that the industry is trying to evolve by adopting more sustainable practices throughout its operations, whether that’s encouraging private jet hire over purchase, or promoting empty-leg flights.

In this article, we’ll be exploring these new practices and discovering whether the aviation industry can set new benchmarks to become eco-friendly.

Sustainable aviation fuels

One of the biggest changes in recent years is seeing the switch to sustainable aviation fuels. These Biofuels are derived from renewable sources, such as algae and waste oils, and are specifically created to meet strict sustainability criteria.

To reduce carbon footprint, the new fuels used also involve a reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions in comparison to conventional jet fuel. Other sustainable fuel types include synthetic fuels, which can be produced using carbon capture technologies and electrolysis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

Efficient aircraft design and technological innovations

The aviation manufacturing industry can contribute towards sustainability missions, too. They do so by putting these goals at the forefront of their operations, working to make technological improvements to make aircraft design more efficient.

By designing high-speed transonic wings, these can cut down on drag and reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Precision-engineered wings provide exceptionally smooth journeys and contribute to effortless engine design.

Auditing

Regular audits enable private jet companies to review the carbon footprint of their operations and offices and work towards defining further sustainability opportunities that contribute to their overall environmental strategy.

External teams will identify areas of improvement to ensure the business is working to strict rules and regulations when it comes to encouraging sustainable practices.

Such audits can also help companies reduce costs, protect human rights, and comply with legal obligations – all while benefitting the environment.

Carbon offsetting programmes

Increasing numbers of private jet operators are offering clients the choice to purchase carbon credits. In turn, these credits help fund renewable energy projects and reforestation efforts, alongside numerous other initiatives that are aimed at reducing the global carbon footprint.

You can also voluntarily offset part of your flight by paying extra for sustainable initiatives, such as sustainable aviation fuel. Many operators also offer emissions calculators at the point of booking, so you can work out your environmental impact ahead of purchasing a flight.
