Evictions ban to end at the end of the month after tense Cabinet meeting

The evictions ban will end on March 31st, with a phased out deadline to the end of June.

After a tense meeting of the three Government leaders last night, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Tánaiste Micheál Martin and Greens chief, Eamon Ryan, it was agreed that the protections for tenants will lapse.

The meeting was also attended by Housing Minister, Darragh O’Brien, who it is understood argued for a further extension of the ban.

A spokesman for Mr O’Brien told the Mirror last night: “Minister O’Brien discussed the winter eviction moratorium this evening with the three leaders.

“It was agreed that Minister O’Brien would bring a detailed memo to Cabinet tomorrow morning where there will be further discussions with Government colleagues.”

In limited circumstances, tenants can still avail of the safety net of an evictions ban.

It has emerged that the deal set to be approved by Cabinet should see special cases allowed avail of the protections of an evictions ban for a few more months.

Meanwhile, in a classic case of give and take, the landlords who may feel their rights impinged by a ban extension look set to receive significant tax breaks in return.

This could see sweeteners worth in the region of €14,000 a year promised to them to keep them from selling their properties.

It would cost just short of €800million a year if all landlords availed of it.

Junior Minister Ossian Smyth publicly outlined the Greens position on Monday evening.

He told TG4 that the Government is looking for a way to “extend the eviction ban in certain circumstances.”

However, meanwhile, Fine Gael leader and Taoiseach, Mr Varadkar, told reporters in Waterford that it was “not a case of black and white,” indicating that no final decisions had yet been taken.
