Everything you need to know about the Hive app that could replace Twitter

Speculation is rising over whether social media app Hive could soon replace Twitter in popularity.

Since Elon Musk's takeover and the announcement last week that Twitter had lost a huge proportion of their staff and closed many of their offices, users have been speculating about which social media platform will rise up to replace it. Many users have set-up accounts on Hive, a platform that rose to prominence at the start of this year.

Hive is regularly referred to as a mix of Twitter and Instagram. The app allows users scroll through people's accounts or look through their feed. Filtering by media gives a user a more Instagram-esque experience of seeing their pictures and videos, while looking at their feed is more similar to scrolling through their tweets.

The app first went viral due to users' ability to add music to their profile, taking people back to the old days of using MySpace. The app also has a browse feature much like Instagram Explore.

The sign-up process is very similar to Twitter, just requiring an email address and password, while other possible Twitter replacements like Mastodon need you to find a server to make an account with. The layout is also very similar, with users able to set up a profile picture and header image, making their Hive account look the same as their Twitter account did.

The app first rose to fame back in February, and is mostly favoured by Gen Z users, which explains the ability to add other details like your pronouns and zodiac sign to your account. Another key difference is that Hive doesn't have the low character limit that Twitter users will be used to, nor can people make threads.

Hive is run by just two people, and they are currently crowd-funding to bring a new feature to the app, which is a far cry from Twitter's new billionaire CEO.

The app allows you to ask an account a question directly, with the option to be anonymous if you want to, which would be helpful for small businesses.
