It’s official! The Council of Fashion Designers of America, usually known as CFDA, has anointed a new crop of tastemakers. The 2023 ceremony took place on Nov. 6th in New York City at the American Museum of Natural History and was hosted by Andi Sachs herself, Anne Hathaway. The Oscar-winning actress took over the role from Sarah Jessica Parker (the And Just Like That... star dropped out due to “unforeseen circumstances.”)
Headlining awards presented at the 2023 CFDA Fashion Awards included the American Womenswear Designer of the Year Scholarship, which went to Catherine Holstein for Khaite; American Accessory Designers of the Year were Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen for The Row; and Willy Chavarria took the price for American Menswear Designer of the Year.
One of the evening's most anticipated awards, the Shop with Google American Emerging Designer of the Year, was awarded to Rachel Scott of Diotima. This year’s nominees include Carly Mark of Puppets and Puppets, Tanner Fletcher's Tanner Richie and Fletcher Kasell, and Bach Mai and Connor Mcknight of their eponymous labels. Zac Posen and Charles Melton presented the award.
In addition to Hathaway, other celebrity presenters included Laura Linney, who awarded the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Scholarship to designer Maria Cornejo. Naomi Watts gave the media award to Alina Cho in honor of Eugenia Shepherd, and The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri co-presented The American Accessory Designer of the Year with Prabal Gurung. R&B artist Mary J. Blige presented a new hip-hop tribute film by music video director Hype Williams, produced by New Era.
