Everything we know after HGV collided with manhole and spilled oil on Newcastle's Quayside

Roads were closed off around Newcastle's Quayside for more than two hours after a HGV collided with a manhole.

Officers from Northumbria Police were called to the scene just before 12.30pm on Thursday on Forth Banks in Newcastle where a truck was found to have spilled oil across the road after hitting a manhole. The officers closed nearby roads while the scene was assessed and a clean-up operation took place.

While Forth Banks was closed, Northumbria Police diverted traffic away from the area. This led to some delays in the area, particularly at The Close near the Copthorne Hotel which remained congested well into the afternoon.

They added that repairs were under way to clean the oil spillage as well as fix the manhole, saying: “The road is partially blocked whilst work is ongoing to clear the spill and repair the damaged manhole. Drivers are asked to use an alternate route where possible.”

The clean-up operation was concluded at around 2.45pm with delays clearing on the roads around the B1600 near the Copthorne Hotel at approximately 4.30pm.
