Everything we know about the Peaky Blinders movie: Creator Steven Knight is 'just finishing' script

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has confirmed that he is finishing up work on the script for the movie spin-off. Filming is now set to begin in 2024. In an interview with the Radio Times, Knight revealed he is putting the finishing touches to the script. He said: "I’m just working on the final bits of it at the moment. I just sit down at the keyboard and start.

"It’s a bit like having a dream, for me. You sit there and all this stuff comes, and then you read it back and think, 'That’s pretty good – but where did it come from?'"

"The plan is to start shooting that in the middle of next year."

Knight recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of the acclaimed series and confirmed that "the story is not yet over".

The show's social media account posted the message: "Huge thanks to our incredible fans for the past ten years. Here’s to the next ten."

The news will hopefully put viewers out of their suspense, since Cillian Murphy told Radio Times earlier this year that he wasn't sure about the movie.

"That’s probably the worst thing about Peaky Blinders – getting asked about the movie all the time!" he joked. "I would love to do a movie if there’s more story to tell. I’ll wait and see but I have no update for you on that."

What’s the plot of the Peaky Blinders film?

Not much has been revealed about the plot just yet, but Knight previously said that the show would end with the first air-raid siren in Birmingham in 1939. That didn’t happen in the TV show, which leads fans to think it could happen in the movie instead.

Who is in the cast of the Peaky Blinders film?

Well, it seems that Polly’s character is going to be in the movie. Knight described her as a valuable part of the show, telling the Radio Times: “Helen was so brilliant. When anything happened in the rest of the series, I wanted people to think, ‘What would Polly say?’.

“It’s like a family when someone passes away, their opinion remains in the house. Polly’s opinion is going to last.”

Knight also explained that they were in conversations with “great actors” for the movie, and wanted to continue to focus on emerging talent.

He said: “There are so many people, so many great actors, that we are already sort of in conversation with for the film, and for whatever follows.

“But I think what we want to do is keep surprising people, and keep breaking new talent. Because it’s all out there, and there is a sort of consistency — what we’re doing is finding really good actors from a working-class sort of background, and telling that story.”

When will the Peaky Blinders film be released?

The Peaky Blinders movie is due to go into production some time in 2023, according to Knight, who told the BFI London Film Festival: “I am going to write the feature which will be set in and shot in Birmingham. And that will probably be the sort of the end of the road for Peaky Blinders as we know it.”

Will Cillian Murphy return as Tommy Shelby?

Knight has said he hopes to “redeem” Murphy’s Tommy Shelby by the end of the story, explaining: “My intention has always been to redeem him so that, at the end, he’s genuinely a good man doing good things.

“And finding how that journey happened, and why it happened, and dealing with all the post-traumatic stress of the First World War, and never easing up on that.”
