It’s been three months since Star Wars fans have gotten new content. Oct. 3 was when the final episode of Ahsoka aired on Disney+ and fans have been waiting for word on what’s coming next.
On Tuesday, we got some news: Din Djarin and Grogu are coming to the big screen.
Lucasfilm announced that Jon Favreau is directing a new Star Wars film simply called The Mandalorian & Grogu that will begin production later this year.
And that’s not all. Season Two of Ahsoka is currently under development by Dave Filoni.
Let’s dive into what it all means for the franchise in a galaxy far, far away.
A Mandalorian movie is coming
The third season of The Mandalorian concluded last spring with Din Djarin and Grogu settling into a seemingly peaceful life after helping Bo Katan and her crew retake Mandalore from Moff Gideon and Empire loyalists.
While the show’s third season seemed to shift the show’s perspective to Bo Katan’s at times, this film – judging from the title and concept art – seems to be exclusively focused on Din and Grogu.
This is the first Star Wars film to actually go into production since The Rise of Skywalker. Films by Patty Jenkins and Kevin Feige were highly anticipated by fans but ultimately failed to launch. Favreau is excited to dive in, saying in a statement:
“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”
Plot details about the film are scarce and Lucasfilm did not announce a release date. However, there is an untitled Star Wars feature film on the schedule for Dec. 19, 2025, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
We’re getting another season of Ahsoka
Ahsoka’s first season ended on a cliff-hanger and fans weren’t quite sure if those loose ends would be resolved in a film or a second season of the show. In the news release about Favreau’s film, Lucasfilm confirmed that Filoni is “currently developing” a second season of Ahsoka.
Which is great news.
Ahsoka allowed Filoni to bring his beloved animated universe from The Clone Wars and Rebels to live action. It was a show that featured fantastic lightsaber duels and awesome acting, while throwing fans right into an adventure with the remnants of the Ghost Crew.
Tuesday’s news dump by Star Wars seemed to confirm that Lucasfilm is comfortable with Favreau and Filoni being its lead creators, and its most important writers and directors in the universe.
Lucasfilm preside Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement:
“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”
Star Wars has something for everyone on the way
Lucasfilm also confirmed that film projects by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold and Filoni are still in the works.
Obaid-Chinoy directed the Ms. Marvel show for Disney+ and has won two Academy Awards for her work on documentaries. Mangold has written and directed films such as Cop Land, Walk the Line, Logan, Ford v Ferrari, and the latest Indiana Jones movie.
It was a reminder that Star Wars seems to be pivoting away from what hurt The Rise of Skywalker, which was trying to appease multiple factions and generations of a large fanbase with one single piece of content. Lucasfilm is now empowering creatives to make different things for specific groups in the fanbase.
