Is there a Ted Lasso season four as cast hopeful of return

The future of Apple TV+ comedy Ted Lasso remains uncertain ahead of the season three finale.

Ted Lasso follows an American sports coach of the same name played by Jason Sudeikis. Ted becomes manager of London-based football team AFC Richmond despite knowing nothing about the sport, but becomes a respected figure by fans and those working at the club.

The heart-warming series has gathered a loyal following and has become one of the most watched shows on the streaming series. Despite this, its future remains uncertain.

Speaking before the season’s premiere, Jason Sudeikis revealed to Deadline that a further instalment was unlikely, with the storyline reaching its planned conclusion. He said: “This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell. The fact that folks will want more and are curious beyond more than what they don’t even know yet—that being season three—it’s flattering.”

Brett Goldstein and Brendan Hunt, who play Roy Kent and Coach Beard in the show respectively, co-write the show along with Sudeikis. They have claimed it was always planned for the show to last three seasons. However, they and several other cast members have expressed hope that the characters could return in the form of several spin-off shows.

In the same interview, Jason Sudeikis said when quizzed on the idea: “Yeah, I think that we’ve set the table for all sorts of folks…to get to watch the further telling of these stories.” In another interview, he argued that the current cast and crew's talent meant that "there’s plenty of water left in that sponge to squeeze out".

Other stars of the show have echoed this view. Hannah Waddingham, who stars as Rebecca Welton and co-hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool, joked that the cast should “put Jason in a darkened room” and make him write the next season.

Toheeb Jimoh, who plays footballer Sam Obisanya, has already suggested a spin-off focussed on the Nigerian restaurant Sam owns in the series. However, with no further season or spin-offs officially confirmed, fans may be waiting a while yet for further instalments in the Ted Lasso universe.

Ted Lasso can be streamed on Apple TV+. The season three finale will be released in the UK at 3pm today.
