The NFL’s quarterback payment scale tipped further into the future on Monday after Los Angeles Chargers starter Justin Herbert agreed his expected contract extension with the franchise.
The deal gives him a $52.5 million-per-season average makes him the highest-paid quarterback per season in the NFL… until his 2020 NFL Draft companion Joe Burrow signs his contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, that is.
Yes, as great at it is for Herbert and the Chargers to get this massive deal done, all eyes went right to Ohio as to what the Bengals were going to do next about Burrow’s inevitable contract extension.
Burrow is perhaps the second-best quarterback in the NFL behind Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and he’s still playing on his rookie contract.

That will soon change, of course, as the Bengals are going to have to get Burrow on a new deal sooner than later. Now that Burrow’s fellow 2020 draft class member has gotten his big deal in Herbert, Burrow will surely want his.
People around the NFL world felt the exact same thing.
Everyone had the same idea.

Jalen Hurts was the highest-paid QB per year in NFL history for 10 days until Lamar Jackson’s deal.
Lamar Jackson was the highest-paid QB per year in NFL history for 89 days until Justin Herbert’s deal.
And a Joe Burrow deal could end Herbert’s new reign.

Six years ago, Derek Carr was the highest-paid QB in the NFL with a $25 million per-year average. We’re now more than double that mark, with Joe Burrow on deck. https://t.co/ngSMdol2TY

All eyes now on the #Bengals and Joe Burrow.

If Justin Herbert just signed a $262.5 million deal … how much should Joe Burrow make? 😳 pic.twitter.com/BcoWGaSR06

Justin Herbert gets just more in total contract value than Lamar Jackson ($260 million), who got just more than Jalen Hurts ($255 million).
Joe Burrow is the next domino to fall. https://t.co/z2Nz6uk9J4
