Every word Nigel Pearson said about keeping Bristol City's WSM together and new contracts

Nigel, you couldn’t have had a better end to the season…

No, good end to the season for us at home. One more game to go, it’s important for us to try and finish the season looking ahead with a bit of optimism.

Lovely for the fans this afternoon, they just wanted to celebrate...

Yeah, but good for the players as well. We’ve not always had the types of performances that we want at home so it was good to finish with a positive performance, we comprehensively won it.

They (Hull) didn’t quite understand what we were. I’ve read with interest that we’re a direct side, we’re a counter-attacking side and we’ve had a lot of possession today as well. We’re able to play in different ways and the most important thing was the clinical side of our game today was really good.

That’s 42 goals this season for the three of your strikers that have scored today, they’re getting talked about a lot and rightly so...

That’s true. It’s just important for us to finish now with another good performance next week, regardless of what the result is, the players and I want another positive performance and hopefully we can finish the season with a bit of optimism.

How good are these three?

How good do you think they are?

Well, would you swap them with any other forwards in the league?

Not really, no. We couldn’t afford other forwards.

These three are fine, they’re good. They’re playing at their maximum every week and they’re doing it very, very well.

We’ve got some players behind them who are also very keen to get their opportunities like Nahki Wells, Sam Bell didn’t get on the bench today, and Tommy Conway. We’ve got some options so it’s good for us as a club.

Sir Alex Ferguson said that you can’t have too many strikers and that’s the case here, you’ve got three first-choice strikers...

Yeah, well I don’t know how other people see it but it’s good to have goals in the side and we’ve needed it this year because we’ve not always been solid enough. It was a good all round performance, defensively we were sound, the midfield two were outstanding, they really were.

You talk about the front three but Joe William and Matty James, you’re not going to get too much better than that.

Joe Williams has had a lot of injury problems but are you starting to see the best of him now?

Yeah, but I think there’s still more to come. He’s feeling a bit better about himself and that’s good, hopefully next season we can get even more out of him and everybody else.

And a word on Andi Weimann, he’s got 22 goals this season and scooped all of the awards at the club, I don’t think even he expected this sort of season, what’s been the difference?

I don’t know. I can’t tell you the answer to that. We’re creating chances and he’s not overthinking things. His confidence is high and I would expect it to be.

As that last finish shows

It was excellent. I’m pleased for Chrissy (Martin) as well, he’s up to a dozen goals and an opportunity next week to get more. We’ve got a strike-force which is difficult to contain and that’s how we want it to be.

Do you think that the front three are always improving?

Their understanding is good, we defend from the front so they don’t just work in a one-dimensional, thinking of themselves as attackers way, they understand their role in the team and we create so many chances because we win it back when our opponents think they’ve got time.

That’s why we’re such a good counter-attacking side, and it starts with those three.

Hull came into the game in good form, three wins out of four - but you made them look like they were on the beach...

I'd never say that about any side. They caught us on a day when we were very efficient.

But that does go to show just how good this side can be when it all clicks together...

We've seen it before, excuse me for pointing it out again but we've played very well on lots of other occasions and it's not come together but it has today. We played outstandingly well last week and won 3-1; the opportunities that came our way for the most part we just took them.

They didn't have much, Bents made a good save in the first half from a header, they had a couple of speculative shots but apart from that, they didn't create much.

Your defence looked really good...

It's about time we had dependable defenders, whether they are spectacular or not is irrelevant, they are just in there to do a job and when you have that you have a better chance of winning the games. You're not always going to get the number of chances that we had today or scoring them.

Last week for the first time we won a game by more than one goal and today we've backed that up with a home win that was very, very convincing. Performance-wise we've played as well during the season, but it's good that the players are switched on at the moment. At the end of the season where we've been safe for a couple of weeks now, they understand the need to finish the season well for themselves individually and as a team too.

Is that a monkey off the back that you've picked up back-to-back wins?

I don't like that saying. It's not something I'd ever talk about but we've got back to back wins.

It must have nagged though...

Yeah, but more with the players than with me to be honest with you, I will reflect on the season when it's over but we're making good progress in the case of individuals coming on and collectively as well we have a more visible identity and I think that's important for us. So the players that aren't currently in the side know what they have to do to come in and if they don't they won't play, so that's tough.

On a positive note, you've had to blood in a number of youngsters this year...

I haven't had to but I've decided to. Last year I had to but this year I haven't had to. But I've decided to because they've deserved their opportunities. For Ayman (Benarous) again, really positive when he went on.

They're good enough, it's not just putting them in there because it makes our academy look good, we're putting them in because they are good enough.

On the back three, how far are we down the road in terms of Timm's situation? Is that a case of waiting until the end of the season?

Not really, I can't tell you where we're at, I don't get involved with that sort of thing. I think he's done really well and I'd like to keep him.

And Robbie (Cundy)?

Slightly different situation because of his injury record and robustness but he's done alright since he's been in the side.

What has pleased you the most about Robbie?

He does what he's good at...

Which is?

Defend. He's not flamboyant, he doesn't try to do something he's not he just does what he is because he's still adjusting to the Championship.

Because he fits your mantra about defenders defending...

I've not seen too many unforced errors from him and the number of goals we've conceded this year from unforced errors is quite frightening really.

On the front three, how confident are you of keeping them for next season?

It depends on whether there are any offers for them. At the moment, as it stands, I don't see any reason why we can't have them but again I don't waste energy thinking about these things. You can speculate about that I'm not really bothered by that. I'll answer questions when something else happens.
