Liverpool's historic victory over Manchester United was notable for plenty of reasons, and Mohamed Salah's record-breaking display was just one of them.
The 7-0 scoreline represented United's heaviest loss of the Premier League era, their heaviest ever defeat against Liverpool, and the heaviest defeat of manager Erik ten Hag's career. It was also a fitting farewell for Roberto Firmino, who signed off with a late goal as he played in the fixture for the final time ahead of his summer exit.
Amid all the drama, though, Salah moved past Robbie Fowler to become Liverpool's all-time top scorer in the Premier League. The Egyptian also has more goals against Man Utd than any other Reds player, thanks to his two second-half goals against the Red Devils.
"It’s very special, I can’t lie," Salah told Sky Sports after breaking the pair of records. He now has 12 goals against United, including 10 in the Premier League, having scored home and away against Liverpool's rivals in each of the last two seasons.
The all-time record is no less impressive, with Salah passing Fowler's record in 61 fewer games. "This record was in my mind since I came here," he said
"I think after my first year I was always chasing that record, so to break it today, against United, with that result, was unbelievable. So I’m going home to celebrate with the family, have a camomile tea and sleep!"
How many more goals can Salah score for Liverpool? Have your say in the comments section
While Salah's century-plus of goals is one of the higher tallies in the Premier League, the identity of other clubs' top active scorers can say a lot about the makeup of their squads. Here, Mirror Football takes a look at the 20 active players who have more league goals than anyone else currently at their club.
Arsenal - Bukayo Saka (27)
Saka's presence on this list shows just how much has changed at Arsenal during Mikel Arteta's reign. Out are the last strikers of the Arsene Wenger era, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette leaving in 2022, and in are the exciting young players pushing for a title.
The England youngster's first Premier League goal came in July 2020, when current manager Arteta was just a few months into his first season. However, after top scoring for the Gunners last term, he is on track to repeat the feat after hitting double figures for a second season in a row.
Aston Villa - Ollie Watkins (33)
Like Arsenal, Villa have made a number of changes to their squad in recent years. A busy summer after promotion in 2019 was followed by further investment when Jack Grealish was sold for a club record fee in 2021, so it's no surprise to learn the highest active current scorer arrived since the team climbed back into the top flight.
Signed from Brentford in 2020 off the back of a 25-goal season in the Championship, the frontman scored a hat-trick against Liverpool in just his third Premier League game. He scored 25 goals across his first two seasons in the competition, and already has eight to his name this term.
Bournemouth - Dominic Solanke (50)
Dominic Solanke's first full Premier League season with Bournemouth wasn't one to remember. The former Liverpool striker scored just three times in 32 top-flight appearances - and none until the final month of the season - as the Cherries were relegated.
A drop to the Championship helped him regain his goalscoring mojo, though. He scored 15 goals in the 2020-21 season and 29 last term to help his team earn promotion, and added three more league efforts in the top tier before the World Cup break.
Brentford - Ivan Toney (57)
Unlike Solanke, Toney has shown an ability to score with regularity in both the Championship and the Premier League. Signed from Peterborough in 2020, the former Newcastle striker hit what was then a competition record 31 goals (more on that further down in this article) to send the Bees up to the top flight.
Toney's dozen goals last season helped keep Thomas Frank's team afloat, and he's outdone himself this time around. A return of 14 goals from just 21 appearances includes a hat-trick against Leeds and a run of five in four games around the turn of the year.
Brighton - Pascal Gross (23)
With Neal Maupay leaving Brighton in the summer, Pascal Gross has taken on the mantle of the Seagulls' highest active scorer. The German midfielder was the first player to join the club after they won promotion under Chris Hughton in 2017, and has shown his worth at the Amex Stadium.
Gross, who turned 31 over the summer, scored a career-best seven goals in his first season on the south coast. He is just one away from matching that tally this season, though, thanks in part to a match-winning double away at Man Utd on the opening weekend of the campaign.
Chelsea - Mason Mount (27)
With Chelsea spending big over the summer and repeating the trick in January, we could soon see a new name atop this list. For now, though, Mason Mount leads the way.
The England international has featured in midfield and further forward since making his Blues debut under Frank Lampard, and finished last season in double-figures for the first time in his Chelsea career. It's been slower going this time out, though, with just three in the league.
Crystal Palace - Wilfried Zaha (80)
It was never going to be anyone else for Crystal Palace, was it? Zaha has 80 goals across two spells with the Eagles, with the bulk of them coming after Palace's promotion to the Premier League.
Back in August 2010, a 17-year-old Zaha scored his first Palace goal in a Championship victory over Leicester City. After leaving for Man Utd and then returning to Selhurst Park, he set a new career high mark last term with 14 in the Premier League.
Everton - Dominic Calvert-Lewin (46)
Everton's fortunes this season could rest on Dominic Calvert-Lewin's fitness, with the Toffees carrying a different kind of threat when he is up front. Richarlison's summer exit put the onus on the former Sheffield United striker, especially with summer signing Neal Maupay struggling in front of goal.
Calvert-Lewin scored his first Everton goal just two days after his 20th birthday, back in 2017. He was lethal under Carlo Ancelotti, scoring 16 league goals in the 2020-21 season, but has netted just once this term with injuries taking their toll.
Fulham - Aleksandar Mitrovic (106)
Mitrovic was the man who broke Ivan Toney's Championship record, finding the net an incredible 43 times to lead Fulham to promotion last term. A challenging 2020-21 campaign had left some wondering whether he could only deliver in the second tier, but that theory has been rubbished under Marco Silva.
The Serbia international has 11 goals from just 19 appearances this season, already matching his best ever top-flight tally. Were it not for injuries restricting his involvement, the tally might be even higher.
Leeds - Patrick Bamford (45)
Like Mitrovic, Bamford is a man whose Premier League credentials were questioned after impressing during a promotion season. However, while he might have struggled for previous clubs, he top-scored for Leeds in 2020-21 to secure a top-half finish under Marcelo Bielsa.
The former Middlesbrough striker is another man who hasn't been without his injury problems this season. A failure to build on that first season has allowed Rodrigo to overtake him as Leeds' top active scorer in the Premier League, but Bamford still leads the way when you include his Championship goals.
Leicester - Jamie Vardy (154)
Leicester's longest-serving player is also their top scorer in the Premier League. Jamie Vardy was with the Foxes in the Championship, scoring 20 goals over two seasons, before adding more than a century in the top tier.
Eight years on from announcing himself in the Premier League as Leicester beat Man Utd 5-3, Vardy has seen the goals dry up somewhat. In the interim, though, there has been a league title, a golden boot and plenty of memorable moments.
Liverpool - Mohamed Salah (129)
When Mohamed Salah struggled to make an impact at Chelsea, few could have anticipated his Liverpool exploits. Premier League and Champions League titles were enough to write the forward into club history, but his 129th goal has added another layer.
A debut goal at Watford in 2017 set the tone, and the 32 league goals he scored that season remains a record for a 38-game Premier League campaign. Two against United on Sunday ensured he has hit double-figures in the league in each of his Reds seasons, remaining a key player after signing a new deal over the summer.
Man City - Kevin De Bruyne (61)
With Manchester City offloading some long-serving players in recent years, only Kevin De Bruyne remains from the pre-Pep Guardiola era. The departures of the likes of Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling in recent years also mean the Belgian is the top active scorer at the club.
De Bruyne joined in a club record deal in the summer of 2015, and scored on his home debut against Bournemouth. He has always been an impressive scorer and assister, but 15 goals last season were crucial in helping City win the title.
Man Utd - Marcus Rashford (73)
Two players who made their United debuts in the 2015-16 lead the way for the club. However, while injuries have seen Anthony Martial's tally dry up, Rashford has taken centre-stage.
There have been occasional struggles for the England football, not least last season when he scored just four times in the league. He has already bested his all-competitions record this season, though, and needs just three more to match his best single-season league return of 17.
Newcastle - Callum Wilson (27)
While Miguel Almiron has closed the gap this season, Callum Wilson still leads the way for Newcastle. The England striker's 27 league goals have come over just 61 appearances, and he's already more than halfway towards the 41 he scored for previous club Bournemouth in the top-flight.
Summer signing Alexander Isak was meant to boost Newcastle's goal threat, but injury issues have ensured that hasn't happened just yet. For the time being, at least, Wilson's tally doesn't appear to be in immediate danger.
Nottingham Forest - Brennan Johnson (23)
Despite Forest's post-promotion spending spree, their top scorer this season is a man who was at the club for their promotion campaign. Brennan Johnson's double against Everton on Sunday took him to seven in the league this term and 23 in total.
The goals this season have been significant ones, too. A winner against Leeds, important home and away goals against Everton, and both goals in a crucial January victory over Leicester.
Southampton - James Ward-Prowse (46)
James Ward-Prowse is essentially Mr Southampton at this stage, having been around the first team for more than a decade. As other players come and go, the midfielder has stuck around and led by example at St Mary's.
The England international scored 10 league goals in one season for the first time last term, and Saints' longest-serving player could be crucial if they're to stay afloat this season. Matt Le Tissier's all-time record is still some way away, though.
Tottenham - Harry Kane (201)
You knew this one, didn't you? Harry Kane isn't just Spurs' top active scorer, but he's their all-time leader - both in the Premier League and in all competitions, taking Jimmy Greaves' record this term.
All things considered, it seems bizarre to think a young Kane looked underwhelming in front of goal during loan spells at Norwich and Leicester in the 2012-13 season. 30 league goals in 2017-18 might be the standout figure, but 20 or more in all competitions in each of the last nine seasons feels more impressive.
West Ham - Michail Antonio (59)
West Ham's number nine Antonio surpassed Paolo Di Canio's Premier League record for the club and has kept going since. Signed as a winger with no Premier League experience whatsoever back in 2015, his tally isn't to be sniffed at.
The Jamaica international is the only Hammers player to score a hat-trick in any of the past six seasons, and the only player to hit four in one Premier League game for the club. That came at the tail end of the 2019-20 season, in a 4-0 win against Norwich.
Wolves - Raul Jimenez (40)
While Jimenez has not found top form since his return from a serious head injury, a prolific start to life at Molineux means he continues to lead the way for Wolves.
The Mexican arrived as the new hope for a newly promoted team, and delivered with 34 goals in his first 86 league games. Since that injury, though, he has added just six in 45.
