Set up by Smart Studio co-founders Butch Vig and Steve Marker, with Nevermind producer Vig's former Spooner bandmate Duke Erikson, it’s fair to say that had the trio not recruited Edinburgh-born former Angelfish vocalist Shirley Manson in 1994 we surely wouldn’t be talking about them today. Adding Manson’s sultry but threatening drawl, and undeniable star quality, to their electronic rock turned the quartet into one of the most successful artists of the '90’s and beyond, with a CV boasting a clutch of killer singles, influential albums, and a James Bond theme.
