Every Football League game called off as Storm Eunice causes mayhem across UK

Football games are beginning to fall victim as Storm Eunice continues to cause havoc up and down the country.

The Met Office has issued red weather warnings for high winds - meaning there is a danger to life - in much of southern and eastern England and south Wales.

The storm, described as one of the worst to hit the country in 30 years, has also caused power cuts to tens of thousands of properties.

Bournemouth's Championship clash with Nottingham Forest on Friday has been postponed over safety concerns, while the League Two game between Exeter City and Barrow on Saturday has also been cancelled.

A statement posted on Exeter's website on Friday lunchtime said: "Due to concerns over the integrity of the Big Bank structure we have made the very difficult decision to postpone tomorrow's match with Barrow.

"We will always take everyone’s safety seriously, and therefore while this is a difficult decision, we do not have a sufficient window of opportunity to inspect the high level structure to confirm if any lasting damage has been done by the persistent high winds.

"We have tried to ensure that this decision has been made early for everyone’s benefit including Barrow who would be travelling down today.

"All options to inspect the necessary connections at high level of the Big Bank are not possible during high winds, which are expected to continue until the scheduled kick-off tomorrow.

"We appreciate your understanding and will update as soon as we can with a new date for the fixture. All purchased tickets will remain valid and we ask that prior to asking for a refund, you wait for the new date."

Also on Friday afternoon it was announced the National League clash between FC Halifax Town and Dover was off due to a waterlogged pitch.

The West Yorkshire side tweeted: "Following a pitch inspection today, tomorrow’s game against Dover Athletic has been called off due to a waterlogged pitch with further rain expected. We will announce a new date for this fixture shortly."

The planned Scottish Championship fixture between Dunfermline Athletic and Partick Thistle has also been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at East End Park.

A clutch of non-league and amateur matches are also expected to be called off this weekend, with the storm causing plenty of damage.

Roads across the country have been blocked by falling trees and debris, with commuters in parts of the north and Scotland waking up on Friday to a blanket of snow.

Rail services across the country were cancelled, while flights have also been delayed or cancelled in airports across the UK. People have been told to only travel if it is absolutely necessary.
