Every extra hour spent sitting could increase risk of cancer, study finds

  • A study suggests that every extra hour spent sitting or lying down could increase the risk of cancer and cancer-related death.
  • Researchers from the University of Glasgow analysed data from 91,292 UK Biobank participants over 12 years, who wore activity monitors.
  • Prolonged sedentary behaviour was linked to a 9 per cent higher risk of cancer mortality and overall cancer incidence, including obesity and type 2 diabetes-related cancers.
  • Interrupting long periods of sitting with short bursts of movement was associated with a lower risk of cancers and type 2 diabetes.
  • Replacing just one hour a day of prolonged sitting with light physical activity, such as walking, was associated with a 12 per cent lower risk of cancer death.
