Every day you will get off over the Christmas and New Year period

It may be over two months away, but for many people, their Christmas planning is well underway. And with the nights getting longer and temperatures beginning to drop, thoughts are turning to cosy days off and precious time with family and friends this festive period.

There are always three bank holidays over the Christmas and New Year period - for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. They are typically on those days themselves, however, if those occasions fall on a weekend, a substitute day, normally the next Monday, is designated a bank holiday to ensure workers get an extra day off.

This year Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday, and Christmas Day on a Sunday. That means Boxing Day, Monday, December 26, is the next bank holiday however Tuesday, December 27 has also been designated one with Christmas Day being at the weekend.

It means those working Monday to Friday will get at least four consecutive days off around the festive period.

New Year's Day also falls on a Sunday meaning the first bank holiday of 2023 is on Monday, January 2 reports Chronicle Live. Following that the new bank holidays are at Easter, next year being celebrated in early April.

If you’re really looking to plan ahead, here are all the dates for the rest of next year’s bank holidays:

  • Friday, April 7 (Good Friday)
  • Monday, April 10 (Easter Monday)
  • Monday, May 1 (Early May bank holiday)
  • Monday, May 29 (Spring bank holiday)
  • Monday, August 28 (Summer bank holiday)
  • Monday, December 25 (Christmas Day)
  • Tuesday, December 26 (Boxing Day)

This year there was additional bank holiday on the day of Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral.

Next year there may also be an extra bank holiday for the coronation of King Charles III. Reports have suggested that this could take place on Saturday June 3 and that it would be the centerpiece of several days of celebration to mark the beginning of the new monarch's reign.

Buckingham Palace has said that the date is “purely speculation” at this stage, though whenever the occasion falls it is likely to be public holiday as it was when the King's late mother was crowned in 1953.

The Business Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg last week threw his support behind the idea despite the reported cost to the economy of over £800million.

“The coronation is an important symbolic act with constitutional resonance about the stability of our system" he said. "To have a day off for that is perfectly reasonable, and the effect on growth will not be enormous."
