Everton to play in winter tournament during Premier League break for World Cup

Everton will travel to Australia during the Premier League's World Cup break.

The Blues have agreed to take part in the Sydney Super Cup, scheduled to begin in mid-November. Celtic, Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers are also due to take part.

The tournament will be the club's third visit to Australia and most recent since 2010, beginning shortly after the domestic season halts for the World Cup. Everton travel to Bournemouth on November 12 for the Blues' last game before the break.

The ECHO confirmed earlier this week the club had been approached by tournament organisers and talks were underway for the Blues to complete the line up following the withdrawal of Rangers earlier this year. Everton have now confirmed participation and are set to play two games in the competition.

Frank Lampard's men will first face Celtic at the 83,500 capacity Accor Stadium in Sydney on Sunday, November 20. They will then play Western Sydney Wanderers - the current side of former Blue Jack Rodwell - at the CommBank Stadium on Wednesday, November 23. The event will start with Celtic playing against Sydney FC on November 17.

Commenting on the plans, Lampard said: “We are really looking forward to travelling to Australia later this year. The winter World Cup has provided us with this opportunity to visit an amazing country and play against really strong opposition. We’ve also got a lot of passionate Evertonians in Australia and we can’t wait to catch up with them. Other than the players on duty at the World Cup, we will be taking our strongest possible squad. This promises to be a very worthwhile tour on every level, and we are delighted to be making the trip.”

Tickets for both fixtures will go on sale on July 11.
