Andy Lonergan has signed a new deal with Everton.
The 39-year-old’s contract expired at the end of last month but he has now committed to the Blues for a further year. The news will provide a boost to Sean Dyche and his management team as the squad begins pre-season today (July 6).
Lonergan has not made a competitive appearance for Everton since joining the club in August 2021. His experience and professionalism is valued by those at Finch Farm, however, including goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly.
Lonergan has been a key part of the goalkeeping unit that has provided a foundation for Jordan Pickford’s impressive form over recent seasons. Together with Asmir Begovic, the three were seen as a solid team that could be trusted to set standards in training as well support the development of the club’s young goalkeepers.

That is set to change this season following the departure of Begovic after he and Everton could not agree on terms for a new deal. The stability provided by Lonergan’s presence should therefore be important - whether in the support of a new number two or if he is called upon to deputise for Pickford. Joao Virginia, who has spent recent seasons on loan, is among those being considered for more responsibility this summer.
Lonergan was the final outstanding senior contract issue for Everton. Andros Townsend and Yerry Mina left the club after their contracts expired as did Tom Davies who, like Begovic, turned down a new offer. Seamus Coleman extended his stay at Everton by a further 12 months.
