Everton 'strongest' candidates for Mohammed Kudus signing amid fierce Premier League interest

Everton remain one of the strongest candidates in the running for Ajax forward Mohammed Kudus after a glittering World Cup campaign, according to Ghanaian journalist Gary Al-Smith.

Kudus shone during Ghana's brief but scintillating group stage campaign in Qatar, scoring twice as his side beat South Korea 3-2 to set up a crucial final meeting with Uruguay. The Black Stars eventually lost that clash and were eliminated, but individually the 22-year-old did himself no harm.

Such form for both country and club - Kudus has nine goals and two assists across all competitions for Ajax this season - has no doubt left Evertonians thinking what could have been. The Blues saw a bid for the rising star late on in the summer transfer window rejected. Kudus, himself, was keen to move to Goodison Park and even reportedly refused to train with Ajax in an attempt to force the transfer through.

But Kudus' performances since then means he is now on the radar of a number of clubs, including Everton's rivals Liverpool, and the blue half of Merseyside may be forgiven for thinking this particular ship has sailed. But according to Al-Smith, the Blues are still in with a good chance.

Discussing a number of African footballers who have impressed during the World Cup, Al-Smith told Sky Sports that Everton are one of the frontrunners for Kudus. He said: “For Ghana, the absolute star of this World Cup has been Mohammed Kudus and we know that three Premier League clubs are interested, with Everton being one of the strongest.”

The Ghanaian journalist added that Tottenham Hotspur are also keen. Spurs full-back Matt Doherty has already issued a ‘come and get me plea’ after describing Kudus as Ghana's 'best player' during their 3-2 defeat to Portugal.

Kudus will return to Ajax for the resumption of their domestic season on January 8 and, with his current contract running until 2025, the Dutch side are in the driving seat regarding any mid-season deal.
