Everton player ratings as three players poor and more struggle in Newcastle loss

Jordan Pickford 6

Roundly booed by the Geordie hordes, his detractors might well point to a supposed lack of inches when being chipped by Miguel Almiron but in truth he could do nothing about the sublime effort and otherwise kept his cool in a fixture in which he’s always in the spotlight.

Seamus Coleman 7

Other than a solitary misjudgement over a bounce in the area early in the second half that resulted in Almiron being played into space again, he was strong and assured and kept out a goalscoring chance with an acrobatic clearance.

Vitalii Mykolenko 6

Solid display in defence as he kept his shape and made a string of headed clearances when Newcastle went long, he was unable to contribute as much in the opposition half as he’d have liked.

Conor Coady 7

Composed display from a solid organiser but struggled against pace at times and found there is no margin for error when there’s so little inspiration at the other end.

James Tarkowski 7

Strong and dominant display at the back, he dealt with most of what Newcastle’s attackers threw at him but along with his colleagues, was undone by an effort from further out.

Idrissa Gueye 6

Booked for pulling back Callum Wilson, he was more like his old self here, carrying out the tireless mopping up duties of the anchor man but couldn’t get close enough to Almiron for his goal.

Amadou Onana 6

Grew into the game with some silky touches and perfectly-placed tackles with those telescopic legs after struggling in the face of some physical treatment from Newcastle’s players in the first half without receiving much protection from the referee.

Alex Iwobi 5

Quiet again as Everton often found themselves on the back foot, he tried to provide some creativity but often cut a frustrated figure before making way for James Garner.

Anthony Gordon 5

Recalled after his suspension, Everton’s home-grown hero continues to suffer from a post-transfer window slump in form and got himself into more scuffles than goalscoring opportunities although his clever back heel to Gray could have led to more.

Demarai Gray 5

Found Calvert-Lewin’s head with a first half corner and a low delivery in the second half after he burst clear, should have picked out someone in the box, he needs to offer more in the final third for all his great promise.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin 6

Great to see him finally start but an unnecessary early booking left him walking a tightrope and despite some neat link-up and a shot on target saved by Nick Pope’s legs that was subject to a late offside flag, he was largely starved of service.

Neal Maupay (on 73 for Calvert-Lewin) 6

Fresh legs up front off the bench.

James Garner (on 73 for Iwobi) 7

Offered a different dimension in midfield late on and made an impressive recovery tackle on Fabian Schar.

Dwight McNeil (on 78 for Gray) 6

Unable to make much impact.
