Everton player ratings as seven men abysmal on harrowing night against Newcastle

Jordan Pickford 5

Had saved from Joelinton in the build up to the first goal, kept Everton in it by making a spectacular save to deny Joe Willock from distance but had little chance with the second of third and was left cruelly exposed for the fourth.

Ben Godfrey 2

Restored at right-back but suffered another horror show as Joelinton left him in his wake for the first goal and Willock did similar to tee up the second.

Vitalii Mykolenko 3

Tough evening as he allowed Callum Wilson to get just ahead of him to the rebound for the opener and never really looked convincing.

Michael Keane 3

Couldn’t get close enough to his markers for the second or third goal and along with Godfrey, he was led a merry dance by substitute Alexander Isak in the build up to the shambolic fourth.

James Tarkowski 3

Offered the most physicality from Everton’s defence but unable to stem the tide in a back four that was all at sea.

Idrissa Gueye 4

Started brightly with a series of interceptions and probing runs but along with so many of his team-mates, was overrun after the break.

Abdoulaye Doucoure 4

Showed what Everton had been missing during his suspension early on but for all his running, there was little purpose to it all here.

Amadou Onana 3

Much expected of him on his return but Everton’s biggest signing of last summer picked up a cheap booking for tugging Bruno Guimaraes’ shirt and was far too passive in the engine room.

Alex Iwobi 5

One of the more determined Everton performers who tried to thrive off the crowd, he was full of running for little reward.

Dwight McNeil 6

One of Everton’s better performers on a harrowing night, he had the quirk of scoring directly from an in-swinging corner kick but it was scant consolation.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin 5

Cruelly denied a goal on his long-awaited Goodison Park return by a tight offside decision, with VAR upholding the initial call to rule it out, he put himself about but was mostly chasing shadows.

Neal Maupay (on 73 for Onana)

Came on to add more attacking threat but the game was gone.

Ellis Simms (on 82 for Calvert-Lewin)

Late cameo in desperately difficult circumstances.

James Garner (on 82 for Gueye)

Same as above.
