Everton player ratings as Neal Maupay and four others shine in win over West Ham

Asmir Begovic 8

Called up to replace injured England number one Jordan Pickford, his handling was assured throughout, as you’d expect from one of the Premier League’s best understudy goalkeepers and he saved well to deny both Cornet and Bowen late on.

Nathan Patterson 8

Strong running going forward and hard work in defence ensured he had the measure of Pablo Fornals before the West Ham United man made way.

Vitalii Mykolenko 7

Not as dynamic as his Scottish team-mate on the opposite flank, he nevertheless produced a determined display and the home fans appreciated a meaty recovery tackle he made on Jarrod Bowen.

James Tarkowski 8

Everton’s rock at the back, he helped steady the ship and get his captain Coady out of jail after he trod on the ball and made several timely interceptions.

Conor Coady 6

Handed the captain’s armband for the first time, the on-loan centre-back, recalled to the England squad, made an uncharacteristic mistake in the first half when gifting the ball to Michail Antonio and was later booked for a foul on the West Ham striker but looked more like his usual, assured self after the break.

Idrissa Gueye 7

Overcame a nervous early moment on his first start since rejoining the club when he over-hit a back pass to Begovic and was soon back in his old rhythm, providing a shield in front of the defence.

Amadou Onana 7

Plenty of entertaining moments again from Everton’s biggest signing of the summer, he always provided an outlet in the centre of the park and wasn’t scared to take the ball in tight situations but remains a precocious work in progress.

Alex Iwobi 8

Bright and breezy getting into the pockets of space in the engine room, he provided the assist for Maupay’s goal with a well-placed pass to the new boy on the edge of the area.

Anthony Gordon 6

More perspiration than inspiration on this occasion for Everton’s in-demand man of the summer, he worked hard on both flanks but was booked for a foul on substitute Cornet and unable to produce much end product before making way.

Demarai Gray 7

Looked a constant threat with his pace, he kept West Ham United’s defenders on their toes throughout but should have done better on a couple of occasions when his fleet-footed prowess got him into promising positions.

Neal Maupay 8

Worked hard to link up play before his goal and then despatched a moment of inspiration to break the deadlock with a smart turn and finish that displayed the predatory instincts that Everton’s attack has been missing.

Dwight McNeil (on 74 for Gordon)

Disciplined late run-out.

Abdoulaye Doucoure (on 81 for Gray)

Solid late on.

Salomon Rondon (on 89 for Maupay)
