Everton player ratings as Idrissa Gueye rash and seven others poor against Aston Villa

Jordan Pickford 7

Little to do for long periods but after making two big saves when it mattered to deny Ollie Watkins twice, blocking a close range effort in the first half and tipping a header onto the post in the second, the Villa striker beat him from the penalty spot with an effort into the roof of the net as he went left.

Seamus Coleman 7

Another purposeful display from Everton’s captain but whereas he was able to push forward with regularity in the first half, he found himself penned back more after the break.

Vitalii Mykolenko 6

His understanding with McNeil in front of him is increasing and the pair dovetailed well at times while his cross that met Onana’s head almost created a goal.

Conor Coady 6

Composed and like the rest of the back four, he defended well but undone by a couple of lapses that cost Everton dearly.

James Tarkowski 6

Headed wide late on and almost found himself with a goalscoring chance in the first half with the ball at his feet while sturdy at the other end.

Idrissa Gueye 5

Generally more like his old self, doing the simple things well that made him a success in his first spell at Everton but while he appeared to get something on the ball with his challenge on John McGinn, it was a rash tackle to make in such a position, giving Anthony Taylor the chance to point to the spot and an invitation that he predictably took.

Abdoulaye Doucoure 6

Picked out Onana for a decent chance with a delayed pass and worked hard in the engine room in what was ultimately a day of disappointment for the team.

Amadou Onana 6

Had to walk a disciplinary tightrope from a minute in after being booked following a clash with Douglas Luiz, he survived conceding a free-kick just outside the area when challenging Leon Bailey and was unfortunate not to head Everton in front when meeting Mykolenko’s cross.

Dwight McNeil 7

Seemingly under instructions to get the ball into the area early and often, he was Everton’s main outlet from out wide but while he remained dangerous, things didn’t quite come off.

Alex Iwobi 6

Almost got himself another assist when his corner picked out Maupay but the striker headed wide, back out wide under Sean Dyche, he was running more at defenders here but made way for Demarai Gray as Everton chased the game.

Neal Maupay 6

Had several good opportunities to double his Everton goal tally, heading wide from Iwobi’s corner, shooting straight at Emiliano Martinez when picked out by Dwight McNeil and seeing an effort hacked off the line after the break.

Demarai Gray (on 70 for Iwobi) 6

Chance with his first touch but couldn’t quite work an opening.

Ellis Simms (on 76 for Maupay) 6

Hooked effort late on.

Tom Davies (on 82 for Onana)

Cameo to protect Onana who had been on a booking almost all the game.
