Everton player ratings as Anthony Gordon and Idrissa Gueye disappointing in Man United defeat

Jordan Pickford 6

Given the eyes by Cristiano Ronaldo for the legendary Portuguese star to score his 700 th goal in club football but while he could do little about Antony’s incisive equaliser, the England number one showed alertness to save from Anthony Martial as United pressed forward.

Seamus Coleman 6

Had his work cut out trying to shackle Marcus Rashford and found himself going backwards rather than forwards much more than at St Mary’s but this was still a determined Goodison Park return for the captain on a tough night.

Vitalii Mykolenko 6

Was left in Antony’s slip stream for United’s equaliser and will hopefully learn from his difficult outing up against one of world football’s most-expensive wingers as he kept plugging away, making some crucial interceptions.

AS IT HAPPENED: Everton vs Manchester United goal updates and analysis

James Tarkowski 6

On a night when Everton were often lacking in attacking ideas, his searching balls upfield at least offered some kind of outlet, but he’ll be mightily relieved that his mistimed challenge that allowed Rashford through for what looked like a third United goal, wasn’t punished with the effort being disallowed for a handball in the build-up.

Conor Coady 6

While he’s far from the first and certainly won’t be the last opposition centre-back to be left in Ronaldo’s wake, he’ll be disappointed with how the United substitute escaped his attentions for the second goal.

Idrissa Gueye 5

That’s two games on the trot that the returning Everton midfielder has given the ball away cheaply with errors that have resulted in opposition goals and while his general play has been impressive so far, this was far from his best night as he almost repeated his blooper when playing in Christian Eriksen.

Amadou Onana 7

His telescopic legs enabled him to make several timely interceptions, including robbing Casemiro of possession to spark the move for Iwobi’s opener and he often looked on of Everton’s more likely outlets for a bit of inspiration.

Alex Iwobi 7

Bright and breezy again, he was encouraged to shoot by the home crowd when finding himself in space just outside and obliged with a spectacular goal, although he did lose the ball in the build up to United’s second.

Anthony Gordon 5

Taken off midway through the second half after being booked for a follow-through on Bruno Fernandes, the desperate challenge summed up a frustrating night for Everton’s home-grown hero who found it difficult to make his mark after returning from the illness that had restricted him to a substitute’s appearance in the previous match.

Demarai Gray 6

Provided the assist for Iwobi’s opener and looked threatening when running at pace towards United’s defence but nevertheless still sound himself on the periphery of proceedings too often.

Neal Maupay 6

Pugnacious while feeding on scraps like he’d been at Southampton, there was little reward for his efforts here as Everton appeared to be crying out for a more aerial threat.

Dwight McNeil (on 67 for Gordon) 6

Unfortunate to drop to the bench after netting the match-winner last time out, he offered some fresh legs as Everton chased the game.

James Garner (on 75 for Coleman) 6

Denied a debut goal in stoppage time against his former club by De Gea’s spectacular save.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (on 75 for Gueye) 6

Terrific to have him back, hopefully there’s much more to come though.

Salomon Rondon (on 84 for Maupay)

Late cameo as Everton pushed for an equaliser
