Everton must avoid huge January transfer gamble after throwing money at familiar problem

Releasing Salomon Rondon helps free up a space to bring in a striker or two in January and I think Everton have really got to do that.

The Rondon signing didn’t work. It was a shock at the time, not just in terms of his age but where he came from given that he’d been playing for Rafa Benitez in China but the club backed the manager and trusted his judgement.

He never really looked sharp and couldn’t make an impact when called upon so I think letting him go now is the right decision and credit to Salomon too because he could have stayed and sat on his backside while still picking up his wages but he can go and do something else now whether it’s playing for another club or deciding to retire.

Neal Maupay, who is a totally different type of striker to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, hasn’t really set the world alight and he’s still finding his feet and we can’t rely on Calvert-Lewin to play every minute between now and the end of the season because given the amount of football he’s missed, he’ll invariably be picking up niggles here and there.

We need to find a striker who will not only provide back-up to Calvert-Lewin but challenge him too and who that player is I do not know but that’s where we trust Frank Lampard, Kevin Thelwell and the scouting team who have hopefully earmarked a striker to bring into the football club.

Can we afford to bring in someone like that to the club? I don’t think we can afford not to because how much is it going to cost the club financially if we were to get relegated?

The club have thrown money at the problem in the past but at the wrong people. It would be a huge gamble by the club if they decided not to bring in another new striker in January.
