Everton manager hails 'unreal' striker as top-six improvement eyed

Everton boss Brian Sorensen heaped praise on "unreal" striker Katja Snoeijs after the Netherlands international helped the Blues to victory over Brighton in the Women's Super League.

Snoeijs opened the scoring inside 32 minutes at Walton Hall Park, rifling the ball home from a tight angle after a superb ball over the top from Karen Holmgaard. Young England international Katie Robinson equalised for Brighton on the stroke of half time before Hanna Bennison's curling finish in the 91st minute made sure of the three points for the hosts.

Snoeijs' strike was her fifth in as many games, taking her tally up to eight in all competitions in her first season on Merseyside. And Sorensen believes there is still plenty more to come from the 26-year-old.

"I’ve always known that Kat is a top player and a top striker," the Dane told the ECHO after the game.

"Her work rate for the team and her finishing in training is unreal so to see that she is starting to get the confidence to do it in games is really great. Going into next season, that’s what we need because we need to score more goals in general with the amount of possession and domination we have."

Reflecting on his side's overall performance against the Seagulls, Sorensen added: "I was really pleased that we were able to get a well-deserved win in our last home game here.

"We controlled so much of the game. I was not happy with the goal before the break and there were some things we needed to adjust in the second half. The game we had on Wednesday was extremely hard with the red card but we found a way to dig in and we really went for it at the end.

"Everyone who came off the bench chipped in and delivered but I was super pleased when Hanna put a Bennison special in at the end."

Sunday's win means Everton are now guaranteed to finish in the top six - a marked improvement from last season's 10th-place finish. While the Blues still have work to do if they are to close the gap on the WSL's top four, Sorensen is confident his team are heading in the right direction.

"We keep going and we play the same way no matter the opponent. That will benefit us in the long run," he said.

"I said to the girls before the game that while we get a knock in confidence when we lose, we are on the right track with the way we are playing and we just need to be more clinical at both ends of the pitch.

"If we look at our performances in the last few months, the football we have been playing is the level we need to go to and the results will come, no question about it.

"I always look at our performances because that’s what is going to carry us to the next level so we’re really pleased with a top six finish."

Everton will conclude their 2022/23 campaign with a trip to fourth-placed Manchester City next Saturday (May 27).
