Andy Lonergan has signed a new contract with Everton ahead of the Blues flying out to the USA. The goalkeeper was signed by Rafael Benitez last summer but was one of the two out-of-contract players considering new deals when Everton published their full retained and released list last month.
Jonjoe Kenny had already decided to quit Goodison Park but Lonergan and defender Lewis Gibson’s futures remained in the balance. However, Lonergan, who was pictured playing in Saturday’s training game at Finch Farm, has now put pen to paper on a new one-year deal and is expected to reprise his role as Frank Lampard’s third choice behind England number one Jordan Pickford and Asmir Begovic – who the club took up their option on a second year for – after Joao Virginia and Harry Tyrer were loaned out to Dutch club SC Cambuur and National League North side Chester respectively on Friday.

Lonergan, 38, has made over 402 career appearances, 231 for his home city club Preston North End and was also at Everton’s neighbours Liverpool for the 2019/20 season but like the Blues so far, he did not play in any competitive matches. However, Lonergan did prove a valuable squad member for Everton last term, being named on the bench on 15 occasions.
Everton are due to fly out from Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport on Monday ahead of their two-match tour of the USA where they will play fellow Premier League side Arsenal in Baltimore before visiting Major League Soccer outfit Minnesota United. Gibson is not on the trip but the ECHO understands that the Blues are hopeful that his deal will also be signed this week.
