Everton dog 'icon' Myra accidentally became relegation saviour on lunchtime walk

A dog named Myra became an unlikely hero as Everton beat Chelsea to breathe new life into their bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League

Richarlison scored the only goal of the game as Lampard got the better of his former employers. The result wasn't enough to lift Everton out of the bottom three, but they are just two points adrift of both Burnley and Leeds United with a game in hand.

For many fans, though, another highlight arrived when Myra was lifted through a crowd of supporters by her owners. With two home games remaining, the dog - who became a social media sensation - is expected to make another couple of appearances.

Jasmine Priest and Reece Van-Aston-Kerrigan, Myra's owners, took the Belgian Malinois for a lunchtime walk in Stanley Park. However, as they returned home, their path was blocked by a flood of Everton supporters.

"We took the dog out as normal and noticed that there was an Everton match on, fans were already beginning to congregate," Van-Aston-Kerrigan told the Liverpool Echo. "There were around 100-200 people around the ground.

"We ploughed through as normal, went to Stanley Park, did our walk for about 45 minutes and then headed home. We came back and there were a few more people there than what we thought.

"We walked through thinking it might be the same as the morning. We made it about 100 yards and the dog was struggling to get through all the crowds, as were we. I decided to pick her up and that got us a little further, but then I ended up saying to Jasmine ‘get her front legs’.

"When we picked her up and got her above our heads, it was like a parting of the Red Sea. Everyone was clapping and cheering, we’ve never seen anything like it before."

Those witnessing the scenes on social media called for Myra to make an appearance at more games, after adding to the joy of the occasion. Others, as reported by the Echo, have called for a banner for the dog to be put up at Goodison Park's Gwladys Street End.

Everton's victory over Chelsea was just their second in their last six games and only their fourth in the league since Lampard took over in January. After the game, the manager was full of praise for the fans after his impressive home form continued.

"The fans are in the middle of this," he told Sky Sports after the win. "I am pleased the players could see on the way in what it means to the fans.

"They know that and understand it. They got behind us, were nicely aggressive, this place has to be a hard place to come. Results have been good here at Goodison before I came, we have to maintain that."
