Having lost back-to-back matches now, the trip to Newcastle United is absolutely huge for Everton but we’ve got to remember that our season is not going to be defined by a defeat to Tottenham Hotspur away. Newcastle’s fanbase are on a high right now with the feeling that’s been going around the club since the takeover a year ago.
We know what it’s like when there’s a new owner, expectations grow and fans enjoy going to the games again. It’s always been a difficult ground to play at but there’s an extra bounce among Newcastle’s squad right now.
Will it be as difficult as Tottenham? It shouldn’t be but we don’t want to be looking at three consecutive defeats. There’s been a short turnaround since the last game and this is a huge opportunity for our players to stand up and be counted.

We know that if you’re able to quieten down the Geordies, they’ll get anxious. We know that we need to keep Jordan Pickford chilled and relaxed.
He doesn’t need to listen to the home crowd, he has to stay professional and just do his job. There’s no need for him to be reacting to them and waving his hand in the air every two minutes, he just needs to trust his team-mates to go and carry out what they’ve been coached to do.
Every touch and every pass doesn’t need to be talked through with the waving of hands, whether that’s playing to the fans or the cameras. Jordan must keep calm, if they give him stick then he should just ignore them.
As a team, Everton have got to try and get their foot on the ball and keep possession to keep the home supporters quiet and get a foothold in the game. You don’t have to try and score each time you get the ball or go forward at 100 miles per hour, you pick your moments to make sure your team is ready.
I’ve said already this season there have been times when Jordan has been rushing things with his kicking when his team-mates aren’t set. Let’s have a bit of composure and ball retention.
They feel that because they’ve got wealthy owners, they should be winning football matches but you’ve got to earn the right to do that by being brave on the ball, making the correct decisions and playing to your strengths. If we can do all three of those things then I am sure we can get something out of the game.
