Events take place in Dublin and abroad to mark 100 year anniversary of Ulysses

This Wednesday marks the 100 year anniversary of James Joyce's Ulysses being published as one continuous novel.

It had been published previously in an American Journal but as individual stories.

To commemorate the anniversary of Ulysees being published as one continuous novel, a number of events are being held across Dublin and in cities across Europe where Joyce left his mark.

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council is running a number of events under the banner, Ulysses 100 events.

In collaboration with the group, Friends of Joyce Tower, DLR tourism & heritage have announced events that will take place from January 29 until February 2.

The events include:

  • Walking tour of the real people of Ulysses at Deansgrange Cemetery
  • The cat and the devil online event
  • Ulysses - the film
  • Who in their right mind would want to read Ulysses?
  • James Joyce Chamber Music
  • Birthday Cake at James Joyce Tower.

RTE will broadcast a number of programs on TV, online and radio to celebrate the anniversary.

On RTE One and RTE Player, 100 years of Ulysses will be broadcast at 10.15pm on February 3.

A special Nationwide program on RTE One will be broadcast on February 2.

"Presenter Anne Cassin views the first-ever printed copy of Ulysses with Katherine McSharry at MOLI (Museum of Literature Ireland); meets Booker prize-winning author, Anne Enright who shares her thoughts on the famous book; visits the Joyce Tower in Sandycove to chat with one of the early curators, Vivien Igoe; and returns to Studio 9 in RTÉ with actor Patrick Dawson to hear about the marathon 30-hour radio dramatization which was broadcast in 1982."

On RTE Radio 1, Arena will broadcast a special edition dedicated to Ulysses with contributions from Colm Toibin, Nuala O’Connor, Mary Costello, John Patrick McHugh and Catherine Flynn.

RTE Online will show Ulysses at 100 which includes readings from Caitriona Balfe and Stephen Rea.

An international event called Ulysses Journey 2022 will be held to mark the 100-year anniversary, running from February 1 - June 18 in Dublin, Belfast, Paris and Budapest.

Six commissioned works are to be broadcast across these cities.

Ulysses Journey 2022 is a collaboration between Contemporary Music Centre, Ireland (CMC) and Centre Culturel Irlandais (CCI).

CMC director Evonne Ferguson said: “An international project of this scale and reach could not have been delivered by us alone.

“We are delighted to collaborate with Centre Culturel Irlandais and so many other wonderful organisations in combining our collective expertise and resources to bring this project to fruition.”
