Evangelos Marinakis recruits former Nottingham Forest transfer chief to new role

Former Nottingham Forest transfer chief Jose Anigo has been appointed director of football at Olympiacos.

It comes as the fellow Evangelos Marinakis-owned side have brought in Spanish coach Michel for a second spell as manager of the club. And he is set to work closely with Anigo.

Anigo will remain director of Olympiacos’ academy. The club say he will “link the operation of the first team, the second team and the infrastructure departments”.

The Frenchman had a spell as head of recruitment at the City Ground. Announcing his appointment, Olympiacos said: “The 61-year-old Frenchman is associated with Marseille, where he first worked as a back-up coach, guiding the likes of Samir Nasri, Seydou Keita, Mathieu Flamini, Andre and Jordan Ayew.

“Then as coach of the first team he led them in 2004 to the final of the UEFA Cup and as director of the football department in one championship, three cups, five appearances in the Champions League and four in UEFA, having worked with players such as Drogba, Ribery, Valbuena, Ben Arfa, Bartez and Mandada. He has coached several teams as a first coach, while in October 2019 he took over as head of scouting for Nottingham Forest.”

Michel replaced Carlos Corberan as Olympiacos boss. The latter, who had previously been in charge of Huddersfield Town when they were beaten by Forest in May’s Championship play-off final, only lasted six weeks in the job.

Summer signings Josh Bowler and Hwang Ui-jo are both on loan at the Greek side from the Reds. It has been a busy few months for both of Marinakis’ clubs, with significant player recruitment having taken place.
