Eva Longoria has claimed Desperate Housewives would fall victim to cancel culture if it aired now.
The Hollywood star played Gabrielle Solis in all eight seasons of the show, which ran from 2004 to 2012, alongside Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman and Marcia Cross.
Ahead of the show’s 20th anniversary, the 48-year-old expressed doubt when asked whether the series could be rebooted for current audiences.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, she shared: “I don’t know if we could do the show today. I think we’d get cancelled.
“I mean, not cancelled on TV but like cancelled in culture because it was so ground-breaking, and we said and did so many things that were shocking at the time.
“I don’t know where these ladies would be now in their life.”
Longoria’s Desperate Housewives character was involved in several scandalous storylines during the course of the show, none more notable than her affair with teenage gardener John, played by Jesse Metcalfe.
Although it was a runaway success at the time, she said that show creator Marc Cherry was not keen about bringing the show back, believing they had fully mined the characters.
She said in agreement of Cherry’s decision: “I could not sleep with one more person on that street – I was like, ‘I’ve slept with everybody. You’ve slept with everybody! We’ve exchanged husbands.’
“It was like, ‘What else? What other stories could we possibly tell [with] these women?’ And so that’s Marc’s big, big thing; he’s like, ‘Why now?’ He doesn’t want to reboot just to reboot.”
Longoria appeared to change her tune about wanting a reboot, having recently admitted during an appearance on ITV’s Lorraine that she was keen to reunite with her Desperate Housewives co-stars.
She told Ross King: “I’d be the first one to sign up. I’d probably be the only one.
“I always tell Marc [Cherry, the show’s creator], ‘So, you wouldn’t do a reboot?’ He just thinks we have fully mined those characters. He doesn’t know what else there is to say about those characters.”
The Hollywood star did admit that she suggested that he should work on spin-off, adding: “I think he’d do a new show on Wisteria Lane. A new set of women.”
