Euston Station was evacuated after police identified a suspicious package, prompting a controlled explosion by bomb disposal experts.

The Metropolitan Police said in a tweet: “We're aware of reports online about an incident in the vicinity of Euston Station. Police cordons are in place as a precaution while officers investigate a suspect package."

Around 20 minutes later, the force confirmed: "A controlled explosion has been carried out by specialist officers and the police cordons have now been lifted. Thank you for your patience."

Cordons were in place during the investigation but have since been removed, allowing the station to reopen.

The Met gave their latest update at shortly after 12.30pm on Saturday.

Stuart tweeted: “Station at #euston been evacuated and cordens all over the place. Plenty of police and incident support teams. Not quite sure what's going on.”

The incident comes one day after Gatwick Airport closed its south terminal to passengers for a period due to a security risk. Passengers who had not cleared security were required to evacuate at around 10.30am and returned by around 2.30pm.

Also on Friday, the US Embassy in London was put into lockdown as police carried out a controlled explosion on a “hoax device”.

A cordon was put in place sealing off the building. The Met Police confirmed it had carried out the explosion after a loud bang was heard in the area.

On Thursday, three men were arrested and a bus station evacuated as the bomb squad was called out to reports of a “potential suspicious item” in Glasgow.

Earlier on Saturday, police dispatched a bomb squad robot to Chester bus and railway stations after a security scare. Officers told the BBC they were investigating "suspicious activity on two buses".

On Twitter, users picked up on an establishing theme of news this week.

One wrote: “Gatwick airport, Euston station, Chester station, the US Embassy and Glasgow have all had bomb threats in the last week.”

Another added: “First Gatwick, then the US embassy and Chester bus and railway stations and now Euston station? Something is going on. This isn’t normal.”
