Eurovision Song Contest 2023: Glasgow makes shortlist for host city

BBC Radio 2 has announced the UK cities shortlisted to host Eurovision 2023 during its breakfast show on Friday morning - and Glasgow made the list.

Several cities up and down the country were taking part in a competitive bidding process including Glasgow, Manchester, Sheffield and London.

The Glasgow Hydro has been the bookies' favourite to host the event over the other 19 areas competing. Any city with a bid in must meet a certain criteria including being within easy reach of an international airport and having enough hotel accommodation for at least 2,000 delegates, journalists and spectators.

It must also have a venue which can accommodate about 10,000 spectators. Ukraine won this year's contest, but due to the current war over there, the country is unable to hold the event next year.

Radio 2 DJ Zoe Ball made the announcement this morning on her Breakfast show, along with Scott Mills.

Scott said: "We are bringing the party to the UK.

"We know there are seven cities on the shortlist.

"In alphabetical order the seven cities are Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Sheffield."

The song contest could be held at Glasgow's Hydro (PA)

Eurovision has been hosted in the UK a total of eight times, including Edinburgh and Brighton.

Scotland's First Minister has been publicly backing Glasgow's bid to be host city and was delighted the Hydro had made the cut.

Taking to Twitter shortly after the announcement was made, she said: "It's got to be Glasgow!"

Eurovision megafan Craig Hill reckons it will definitely take place at the Hydro when the final venue is announced, and has put himself up for hosting it. The kilted comic from East Kilbride is a regular audience member at Eurovision and was in Italy’s Turin when Ukraine won.

He said: "I really do think it’s going to be at the Hydro and it seems like all the fans do as well. I would host Eurovision in a shot! If it ends up there Glasgow will be a great host city!"

Like Glasgow, he has competition to be the TV host, with names in the running including Graham Norton, who has been commenting on Eurovision for the UK since 2009, Rylan Clark, This Morning's Alison Hammond and news presenter Huw Edwards saying he'd like to do it if it's in Cardiff.
