Eurovision's maddest moments from Mel Giedroyc milking to Kate Middleton on piano

Eurovision was hosted by the United Kingdom for the first time in 25 years last night - and we certainly pulled out all the stops.

From a dazzling cameo on piano by Kate Middleton to a bizarre milk-churning skit from Mel Giedroyc, the Brits did Eurovision proud with their mix of musicality and good old fashioned fun.

The contest took place in Liverpool after Ukraine won last year but was unable to host due to the Russian invasion.

Despite high hopes for UK entry Mae Muller, the 25-year-old finished in 25th place, just six points above Germany who came last with 18 points.

Sweden's Loreen scooped the prize with 583 points and will host the Eurovision Song Contest in 2024 which fittingly is the 50th anniversary of ABBA winning with Waterloo in 1974.

Despite failing to replicate Sam Ryder's success from last year, the UK still did us proud with a memorable show full of Eurovision charm.

We take a look at the maddest moments from an impressive show.

Mel Giedroyc milking

Mel Giedroyc delighted viewers with her hilarious scene stealing moment during the Grand Final.

The comedian and presenter, 54, left fans "crying with laughter" as she poked fun at a previous Eurovision contestant.

During host Hannah Waddingham's segment where she was discussing the upcoming acts, the former Great British Bake Off presenter was seen in the background donning a full lederhosen while churning some butter slightly erotically.

Presenter Graham Norton, who was doing his usual commentary, couldn’t help but joke Mel was “literally, milking it”.

He attempted to stifle his laughter, before claiming Mel resembled a former First Lady of the United States - Melania Trump.

Mel was referencing an act from the Polish act from 2014, who wore lowcut milkmaid outfits and churned butter in a wooden tub.

One viewer commented: "What number is it to vote for Mel?? she’s the clear winner."

Kate Middleton on piano

Kate Middleton joined in on the Eurovision Song Contest fun by taking part in the event's opening sequence.

For the Grand Final, the Princess of Wales joined a slew of performers for the opening film.

It has last year's champions, Kalush Orchestra, performing their winning entry, Stefania, from the Maidan Nezalezhnosti metro station in the heart of Kyiv, Ukraine.

The group are also joined from the UK by a number of British icons, including Princess Kate, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sam Ryder, Ms Banks, Ballet Black, Bolt Strings and Joss Stone.

The Princess’ contribution to the film involved a short, instrumental piano performance, created by Joe Price and Kojo Samuel, and was recorded earlier this month.

Her short segment was recorded in the Crimson Drawing Room of Windsor Castle.

Kate looked gorgeous in a royal blue one-shoulder gown as she performed on the piano.

Fans were delighted at her surprise appearance and took to Twitter, with one writing: "Sorry - was that Kate Middleton looking glorious playing the piano on @Eurovision?"

Alesha Dixon raps about King Charles and Queen Camilla

Eurovision fans were left divided as host Alesha Dixon rapped about King Charles and Queen Camilla.

The Britain's Got Talent judge has been presenting the live shows and during her hosting duties, the Mis-Teeq star has been showing off her own talents.

In the Grand Final, Alesha presented a segment in between acts where she decided to do a short rap.

She rapped: "Yes, six acts in and the competition is in full swing. What a week! All killers, no filler, big up King Charles and Queen Camilla. Let's take a look."

The show then played a reel of what's been taking place across the semi-finals.

It was met with mixed feelings from viewers as one gushed: "Rolling it back with her Misteeq days/UK Garage era esque Raps for @bbceurovision #Eurovision has been the TV highlight of this week IMO.

Whilst another said: "Oh god I cringed inside out at Alesha Dixon's little royal rap."

Atomic Kitten song

BBC viewers got quite the surprise when Iceland's Dadi Freyr took to the stage in Liverpool for a surprise performance at the final of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Dadi, who represented Iceland in the 2021 competition, made an appearance at the end of the show to perform a fan-favourite hit.

Viewers were shocked and delighted to hear him singing Atomic Kitten's 2000 iconic song Whole Again.

Fans rushed to social media to gush over the segment, with some calling the performance their "winner".

"Dadi Freyr doing Atomic Kitten is moment of the year. No doubt," one user said.

Another added: "It was too short. We need the whole song," while one posted: "I am going to download the cover of atomic kitten!! Amazing!! I’m now whole again."

Loreen's fingernails

Sweden's winning act Loreen stunned fans with her cinematic performance but aside from her incredible talent there was one thing viewers could not stop talking about - her nails.

Her long false nails were central to her dramatic dancing style as she swirled her hands.

And even host Alesha Dixon was impressed as she questioned where she got them done during the nail-biting final.

In the press conference after winning the contest, Loreen said that her nails were created to look like stone as her performance is a "reminder of nature".
