Teya (Teodora Špirić), 23, and Salena (Selina-Maria Edbauer), 25, met while competing in the Austrian talent show Starmania 21. They bonded over their love of Eurovision and united specifically to enter the contest.
Before they met both had already been in with a chance of representing the country in Eurovision - with Salena coming second in Austria’s 2019 pre-selection and Teya losing out to Vincent Bueno in 2020. Ahead of the final, the duo had already found fame with the song which has gone viral on TikTok, for understandable reasons.
So what is the song about and who exactly is Edgar Allan Poe who is mentioned throughout?
The talented twosome wrote the satirical Who The Hell Is Edgar?, alongside Pele Loriano and Ronald Janeček, and it is about being possessed by the ghost of nineteenth-century American poet and horror author Edgar Allan Poe. He is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and wrote stories such as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher and The Cask of Amontillado.
They wrote the satirical song by drawing on their experiences as female songwriters in an industry that all too often doesn’t give women enough credit for their hard work and expertise.
Speaking ahead of the finals Teya and Salena told the Official Eurovision Song Contest Podcast how much they love people singing the song at them.
They said: "It’s an earworm. It’s a miracle that we’re not annoyed by the song by now, we’ve heard it so many times, we’ve sung it so many times, performed it. When people come up to us and they do ‘Poe, Poe, Poe,’ we get so excited!”
Mae Muller, 25, will compete for the UK with her track I Wrote A Song. Also competing in the grand final is France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Croatia, Moldova, Switzerland, Finland, Czechia, Norway, Israel, Portugal, Serbia, Ukraine, Albania, Cyprus, Estonia, Belgium, Austria, Lithuania, Poland, Australia, Armenia and Slovenia.
The grand final takes place on Saturday from 8pm, live on BBC One.
The lyrics in full to Who the Hell is Edgar?
Oh my god, you’re such a good writer
Oh no it’s not me, it’s Edgar
Who the hell is Edgar?
There’s a ghost in my body
And he is a lyricist
It is Edgar Allan Poe
And I think he can‘t resist
Yeah his brain is in my hand
And it’s moving really fast, mhm
Don’t know how he possessed me
But I’m happy that he did
‘Cause this song is feeling special
And is gonna make me rich
Yeah the words are spilling out
What the heck is this about, mhm
Oh mio padre, there’s a ghost in my body
Ohhhhhhh
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Edgar Allan, Edgar Allan
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Edgar Allan Poe
Maybe I should call a doctor
Or an exorcist
Maybe someone out there knows where
Shakespeare is
So I can get a taste
What‘s your IPI, where‘s the A&R
Girl call Universal, you’re about to be a star!
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Edgar Allan, Edgar Allan
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Edgar Allan
Who the hell is Edgar?
Oh mio padre, there’s a ghost in my body
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Edgar Allan, Edgar Allan
Oh mio padre, there’s a ghost in my body
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Edgar Allan Poe
Zero dot zero zero three
Give me two years and your dinner will be free
Gas station Champagne is on me
Edgar cannot pay rent for me
Zero dot zero zero
Zero dot zero zero
Zero dot zero zero three
At least it pays to be funny
Oh mio padre, oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
There’s a ghost in my body
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Who the hell is Edgar Allen
Oh mio padre, oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
there’s a ghost in my body
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Edgar Allan Edgar Allan
Oh mio padre,oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
There’s a ghost in my body
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Who the hell is Edgar Allen
Oh mio padre, oh oh oh oh oh oh o
There’s a ghost in my body
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe, Poe
Edgar Allan Edgar Allan
Oh mio padre, there’s a ghost in my body
Ohhh
Who the hell is Edgar?
