Italy stormed to top the medal table at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome as Great Britain & Northern Ireland finished third.
Keely Hodgkinson led the British interest on Wednesday’s final night and retained her 800-metre title before a fourth European triumph for the women’s 4x100m relay team.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen stormed to the 1,500m gold as Britain’s Neil Gourley came up short on the home straight, the Norwegian adding to his 5,000m title from earlier in the week.
Earlier in the Championships, George Mills and Romell Glave got Britain on the board with a silver and a bronze respectively, while Calli Hauger-Thackery led Team GB to team gold in the women’s half marathon.
Dina Asher-Smith backed that up on Sunday night as she defied a poor start to win 100m gold. Georgia Bell took silver in the 1500m, and Lizzie Bird was moved up to second in the women's 3,000m steeplechase after initial winner Alice Finot was disqualified. Daryll Neita was denied gold in a photo finish in the women's 200m final on Tuesday.
After winning 400m ahead of Britain’s Charlie Dobson with a Championship record time, Belgium’s Alexander Doom then led his nation to the men’s 4x400m relay gold and Italy rounded off a fine Championships with the final track gold in the 4x100m. Last but not least, the pole vault wrapped up the final night’s competition with victory for Sweden’s Armand Duplantis.
