A EuroMillions winner who saved a police officer’s life days before winning a £1 million jackpot has died after a suspected hit-and-run.
Anthony Canty, 39, was knocked off his bicycle in Tiptree, Essex, on May 21, and died in hospital four days later.
In April 2020, Mr Canty had been on his way home from work when the police officer collapsed on a bus.
He rang the bell to stop the bus and gave the officer CPR with the help of the 999 operator and first aid training he had at work, with the officer then being airlifted to hospital and spending five days in intensive care.
Just weeks later, Mr Canty, from Maldon in Essex, won the EuroMillions prize with his partner, Katie Sullivan.
On May 21, Essex Police were called to a collision between a cyclist and a black Ford Ka in Maldon Road, Tiptree, at around 6.30am.
The force said that an 18-year-old man was initially arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink/drugs and failing to stop.
He allegedly fled the scene after the incident, while Mr Canty was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
He remains under investigation and enquiries continue, with officers appealing for anyone who saw or has footage of a black Ford Ka car being driven in the area around the time of the collision to come forward.
Essex Police said: “If you have any information, CCTV, dash cam or other footage in relation to this incident, then please get in contact with us. Please quote 174 of 21 May.”
