Just in time for peak summer travel season, European rail pass company Eurail has announced an additional partner in Denmark and the launch of two new overnight train routes to Italy.
As of April 1, 2023, Lokaltog — a regional Danish railway company that operates on three of the Scandinavian nation's islands — has been added to the network. The Lokaltog train routes added to the Eurail pass network will not require reservations (reservations are required on some extremely popular rail services), which means travelers with a Eurail pass will be able to explore more of Denmark at no extra cost.
Many of these train lines are on Zealand Island (known in Denmark as Sjælland Island), which is home to the Danish capital of Copenhagen. With the addition of these new routes to the Eurail pass network, those visiting the charming Danish capital will be able to strike out and explore even more of the surrounding region, including coastal villages and Fredensborg Palace.
Eurail also announced that this summer will see two seasonal overnight trains running to Italy, which will offer travelers a unique "slow travel" experience through the heart of the country before ending on the shores of the Adriatic Sea.
Starting in June, travelers will be able to depart from multiple cities and arrive in Ancona, Italy, (and vice versa) the next morning. Popular stops along the way include Bologna (regarded by many as Italy's food capital), Pesaro and the popular seaside resort Rimini.
The capital of the Marche region, coastal city Ancona is an ideal base for exploring the natural beauty of the Conero Riviera and serves as the departure point for popular ferries to Croatia and Greece, a fact that opens up even more possibilities for travelers.
These two new routes come on the heels of the addition earlier this year of an overnight service from either Vienna, Austria or Munich, Germany to La Spezia, Italy. This route stops at destinations like Milan and Genoa en route to La Spezia, which is located on the Ligurian Coast and is the perfect springboard for exploring the five romantic villages of the Cinque Terre.
Eurail passes allow travelers to travel freely across a network of train and ferry connections in 33 countries — all with one ticket. Travelers choose between a "Global Pass" which includes access to all countries or a "One Country Pass" and then are able to travel as much as they want during the validity period of the pass.
