The UK Global Health Insurance Card lets you get state healthcare in Europe at a reduced cost or sometimes for free.
However, it's important to know that the UK European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is only valid until the expiry date on the card. For most people, the UK Global Health Insurance Card (UK GHIC) replaces the existing European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for new applications.
You can apply for a new card for free up to six months before your current card expires.

How to apply for a EU health insurance card:
You can apply for a GHIC on the NHS website. You’ll need to provide your:
- full name
- address
- date of birth
- National Insurance or NHS number
Where you can use an EU health insurance card and what it can be used for:
You can use your card for healthcare that cannot reasonably wait until you come back to the UK. Medically necessary healthcare includes things like emergency treatment and visits to A&E or routine medical care for pre-existing conditions that need monitoring.
A full list is available on the NHS website.
Do I still need travel insurance with an EU health card?
The EHIC or GHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance. It may not cover all health costs and never covers repatriation costs. You should always buy travel insurance after booking your holiday.
