Roundup: Carse gets back down to business, Surrey toil again
Durham’s Brydon Carse, last pictured in handcuffs outside a Derby nightclub and subsequently dropped from England’s Test squad, took his emotions out on Gloucestershire early. He truncheoned Joe Phillips’s middle stump with his sixth ball and induced Miles Hammond into a flamboyant drive by a couple of overs later. With Matthew Potts snaffling Cameron Bancroft, Gloucestershire were on the precipice at 13 for three. A classy 60 from James Bracey enabled them to limp to 137, but Kasey Aldridge mopped up most of the rest with five for 16. Durham then lost two quick wickets, until an unbeaten half-century from David Bedingham sailed them to calmer waters.
It was another dud day for Surrey on what is turning into a miserable Championship summer. After losing the toss and being asked to bat, they were soon in trouble on a verdant Chelmsford wicket. Sam Cook, who swapped into the Essex side after being released by England, picked up three wickets alongside Zaman Akhter, as Surrey were dismissed for 183. Adam Thomas top scored with 43, but there were few consolation runs for Ollie Pope, also surplus to requirements at Lord’s. There was just time for Essex’s Paul Walter to be caught behind before bad light stopped play.
Honours were fairly even at North Marine Road where the rain blew in mid-afternoon. Leicestershire’s Josh Davey plucked out both Yorkshire openers cheaply, but Sam Whiteman and James Wharton, unbeaten on 70, restocked the shelves. Jonny Bairstow flashed hazardly and was caught behind for one, to Scarborough sighs.
Zak Crawley’s highest score of the season gave Kent a boost on a long day waiting for the rain to stop at Wantage Road. His unbeaten 82 dominated an unbroken opening stand of 154 with Ben Compton in the promotion nose to nose against Northamptonshire.
Sonny Baker ripped up Glamorgan’s rebuilding plans, with two wickets in his first over after being subbed into the Hampshire side. It was a typically Tiggerish entrance on a damp day designed for bowlers – 17 wickets fell, including Glamorgan’s top three all for ducks. Sussex’s Henry Crocombe grabbed a hat-trick at Hove as Somerset lost their last five wickets for 11 runs.
Wet, wet wet, with three games completely wiped out today. There was still time for Brydon Carse to send down a couple of grenades, Sonny Baker to do the same, Zak Crawley to reach his highest score of the summer, James Bracey to prop up an outclassed Gloucestershire, a hat-trick for Henry Crocombe, another bad day for Surrey and 17 wickets to fall at Sophia Gardens. Ollie Pope will not prop up Surrey this time, tilting his head unhappily, lbw to Zaman Akhter for 13. Surrey 138-7.
Ben Kellaway (31) and Colin Ingram (28) are doing a thorough rebuilding job at Sophia Gardens, heritage brick by heritage brick. Kellaway, who did’t make the Lions squad earlier this summer, has had a quietly good season, over 900 runs, averaging 43, plus eight wickets. Ingram too nearly has 1000 runs. Glamorgan 63-3, 101 behind Hampshire.
At Wantage Road Compton and Crawley have seen off Sanderson, Guthrie and Proctor for 45 minutes: Kent 31-0.

Ollie Pope, one of five England players released from Lord’s this morning (Shoaib Bashir, Sam Cook, Sonny Baker and Matt Fisher the others) is in at Chelmsford as Surrey languish through another tricky day. Surrey 118-6.

No one is hanging around at Hove today, Tom Haines shuffles for a one-handed nudge legside and is caught off Gregory. Sussex 16-1.
Adam Thomas and Mahipal Lomror are rebuilding rebuilt for Surrey, adding 52 for the fifth wicket, only Lomror has just been run out, a yes-no second. The bails were knocked off by Sam Cook, who has substituted in for Charlie Bennett after being sent hot-foot from Lord’s. Surrey 102-5.

Hattrick for Henry Crocombe
Go for a quick circuit of North Marine Road, (white gloom, covers now on) and come back to find Henry Crocombe has taken a hat-trick – Coverton, Pretorius, Leach - to finish Somerset off, and Glamorgan are 11-3, ul Hassan lbw Abbott for the third duck of the innings.
Craig Overton (again) has breathed life into the Somerset batting. He walked in at 96-5, walked off at 202-8, with a boundary-laden 54 round his neck. Somerset 202-9.
No play today at Edgbaston
The rain fell and the covers remained static.
And Durham in a spot of trouble too, 19-2, both openers out. Ben McKinney, in such angelic touch last weekend against Derbyshire, splat an ugly hoik, gets a top edge and is caught for eight.
Asa Tribe’s tricky season continues, squared up and caught by Lehman, in front of his nose at third slip off Eddie b Jack for 0. Kiran Carlson follows, to the same combination, only a more acrobatic catch, three balls later. Glamorgan 0-2.
Someone seems to have dimmed the lights here at Scarborough. The players come off for bad light and they take tea as the pot shots start at the Battle of Peasholm naval re-enactment. Yorks 144-5.

Hampshire have limped to 162, three wickets to Glamorgan’s ul Hassan and Mir Hamza. Jake Lehman’s 51 was the only real ballast.

Ben Foakes purred a hundred in his first innings of the year. Then he got injured turning his arm over to fill some filler bowling against Essex in late April. Since his return he’s made,12, 1 and now 0. Rough old game cricket. Surrey 50-4.
Bad news for Gloucestershire fans, their touchstone, is out, a fourth for Kasey Aldridge – James Bracey lbw for 60. Glos 133-9, and now 137-10. Over to you Durham.

And Surrey have lost a second wicket at Chelmsford – Josh Blake squirts Snater straight into the hands of Simon Harmer at second slip. Surrey 41-2.
And that’s the end of Whiteman, who dollies a gentle catch to Tattersall – the end of a valuable 115-run stand for the third wicket.
Hampshire are folding, arms, legs, collar – now 129-8, and that includes 19 extras.

A flapjack, millionaires shortbread, kitkat and cake in my generous Scarborough packed lunch, which combined with working in a condemned press box in a condemned north stand might be enough to finish me off. I loved the stat that , before the victory over Essex, Somerset hadn’t won a match without him since 2019.

Preamble
Good morning and welcome to the last August round of this year’s County Championship. It was misty at Huddersfield, bone yellow after Leeds, brisk at Seamer. Scarborough, for now, is dry and full of open-top buses.
There are just five rounds to go and every match swells in importance. Kent’s trip to Northants looks a particularly big one, with the two teams still locked battle for the second promotion place. Leaders Notts travel to Edgbaston to take on third-placed Warwickshire, while Sussex, after last round’s disappointment, will be hoping for better against a Somerset side already dreaming that this could be the year. Naughty boys Durham are rewarded with wooden spoonishts Gloucestershire.
Play starts at 11am, put the kettle on and join us. The sofa is endless.
